PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Quincy asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. State code requires a permit to demolish any structure, and Quincy files demolitions online with a city checklist. The fee is $12 per $1,000 of estimated cost. Inspectional Services: 617-376-1450.

No. Quincy's building department says construction debris isn't allowed in the City's trash collection, and the DPW tells residents to call a private disposal company for demolition debris.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The state building code makes it unlawful to remove or demolish a building or structure without a permit. The code exempts building a one-story tool or storage shed of up to 120 square feet, but that exemption is written for construction, and no source found extends it to teardown. Quincy takes applications online, and § 150-3 of the city code charges $12 per $1,000 of estimated cost for demolition; starting without a permit doubles the fee. Inspectional Services: 617-376-1450.

Quincy's demolition checklist needs sign-off from several offices. Gas and electric utilities send letters confirming service was cut at the street, and Dig Safe must be notified. The Health Department wants a pest control plan from a licensed company and bait boxes every 40 feet around the site, checked every two weeks. The Fire and Police Departments and a compliance officer also review. The checklist is written for whole-site demolitions and doesn't carve out sheds; ask which items apply.

MassDEP must get an asbestos notification at least ten working days before any project that removes or disposes of asbestos. Its separate construction and demolition notification doesn't apply to residential buildings with fewer than 20 units. State waste bans keep wood out of landfills and keep metal, brick and concrete out of disposal, so shed debris goes to a C&D transfer station that sorts it.
MassDEP: Asbestos, Construction & Demolition Notifications ↗MassDEP: Waste Disposal Bans ↗
No. Capitol Waste Services collects household trash, and furniture goes out without a call, but collectors don't have to lift anything over 50 pounds and aren't contracted to take clean-out debris. The building department says construction debris isn't allowed in the City's trash collection, and the DPW tells residents with construction and demolition debris to contact a private disposal company. A shed needs a removal company, a dumpster or a trip to a transfer station.

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

It doesn't take hazardous materials, asbestos, liquids such as paint, or kitchen trash, and its site says bulky and clean-out debris can't be accepted at this time.

Trojan Recycling: Transfer Station ↗Trojan Recycling: FAQ ↗Trojan Recycling ↗
55 Sea St., Quincy, MA 02169
The City's drop-off for Quincy residents only. It takes all scrap metal, appliances (no refrigerators or dishwashers), single-stream recycling, electronics, mercury items and yard waste, so it suits a cut-up metal shed. It doesn't take wood, construction debris, trash, tires, paint, oil, gasoline or chemicals.
Fees: No fee is listed.
Before you go: Open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from April 4 to December 5, 2026. Bring a valid Massachusetts driver's license; commercial plates need written approval from the Commissioner's Office. Questions: 617-376-1957.
Quincy's curbside contractor, Capitol Waste Services, collects household trash only. For construction and demolition debris, the City tells residents to hire a private disposal company, and no city page or ordinance found gives one company exclusive rights to it. Companies that transport rubbish or refuse in Quincy file a yearly permit with the Health Department: $100, running January 1 to December 31, with a list of the Quincy clients they serve and where the waste goes. The application doesn't say whether a crew hauling one shed's lumber counts, and it doesn't cover you hauling your own debris.

Quincy has two local historic districts: Quincy Center and the Adams Birthplace district. Inside them, a building on the Historical Commission's List A can't be demolished until the commission issues a certificate of appropriateness or hardship. City code says demolishing any other building in the districts doesn't need a certificate.
Quincy residents can drop scrap metal, appliances, electronics and yard waste at the DPW Yard behind 55 Sea Street, so a cut-up metal shed can go there free. The yard doesn't take wood, construction debris, trash, tires, paint or chemicals, and commercial-plate vehicles need written approval first.

Quincy's Building Department has permit applicants sign a debris removal form naming the licensed disposal facility or dumpster company that will take the debris. State law makes proper disposal a condition of any demolition permit, and the form says construction debris can't go in the City's trash collection.
