SHED REMOVAL IN DETROIT

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Detroit shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Detroit requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Detroit ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Detroit asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Detroit rules at a glance

Demolition permit

No, for most wood sheds. Detroit requires a wrecking permit except for one-story frame buildings of 500 sq ft or less. Ask BSEED at (313) 224-3202 about metal sheds or anything larger.

City pickup

Partly. Bulk pickup takes up to 2 cubic yards a week of bundled lumber under 4 feet and 50 lbs, nails removed. Shingles, concrete and metal poles are refused.

Haul it yourself

J. Fons Transfer Station (Priority Waste). The public works department's 2026 guide lists $95 for the first 2,000 lbs of renovation materials (2,000 lb minimum), prorated after that. An older city page lists $65 for the first 2,000 lbs and $50 for each additional 2,000 lbs. Priority Waste posts no prices.

Do I need a permit?Detroit demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Detroit pick up shed debris?

Some of it, in small batches. Detroit's weekly bulk collection accepts household renovation materials up to 2 cubic yards, about two stoves' worth. Wood and lumber must be bundled with nails, screws and staples removed, each piece under 4 feet long and each bundle under 50 lbs. Concrete, brick, asphalt, shingles and metal poles and pipes are not accepted. For more, DPW's paid pickup gives an estimate based on size and weight, but only for debris at the front curb, not in yards or alleys. Call DPW at 313-876-0004.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Tires, paint, liquids and hazardous materials are refused. Concrete isn't mentioned.

Fees: The public works department's 2026 guide lists $95 for the first 2,000 lbs of renovation materials (2,000 lb minimum), prorated after that. An older city page lists $65 for the first 2,000 lbs and $50 for each additional 2,000 lbs. Priority Waste posts no prices.

What else should I know in Detroit?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Detroit licenses demolition contractors and waste haulers

There is no exclusive hauler for demolition debris in Detroit, but two City licences can apply to a hired crew. The Building Code says no business may contract to demolish, disassemble or dismantle and remove buildings or structures without a BSEED wrecking contractor license, and work under a wrecking permit must be done by the licensee's own employees or by the homestead owner. Separately, anyone who collects and transports solid waste through City streets needs a Police Department licence. Neither rule says whether it covers a small shed that needs no permit, and the City publishes no list of licence holders.

Two contractors collect bulk, by side of town

DPW's 2026 flyer splits curbside service by area: Priority Waste serves the east side and southwest Detroit (1-855-927-8365), and Waste Management serves the west side (1-844-233-8764). Set bulk only in front of your own house; bulk in front of a vacant lot or another house can get you a ticket.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Detroit?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Wayne County, and it costs less if the shed is already taken apart.

Where can I drop off shed debris myself?

J. Fons Transfer Station at 6451 E. McNichols takes construction and renovation debris for a fee: $95 for the first 2,000 lbs in DPW's 2026 guide, though an older City page says $65. The free DPW yards refuse remodeling, demolition debris and building materials. Riverview Land Preserve, a City of Riverview landfill, also takes public loads on weekdays.

Can I sell a metal shed for scrap?

Yes. Sikora Metals on Mount Elliott posted aluminum siding at $0.80 a pound and steel at $200 a net ton on September 25, 2026. You need a state ID, and steel must come in a truck, van or SUV, not a car.

Do I need an asbestos survey for an old shed?

Michigan EGLE says homes with four or fewer units under private ownership aren't subject to the federal asbestos rules (NESHAP), but a private home torn down as part of a public or commercial project is. Old cement-board siding or roofing can still contain asbestos, so have suspect material tested before it is broken up.

What about the wiring to the shed?

BSEED says electrical work needs a permit. Homeowners can pull trade permits themselves for a single-family house; otherwise a licensed electrician does. Have the circuit shut off and made safe before the shed comes down.

Do I need to call before pulling posts or a slab?

Yes. Michigan law requires utility lines to be flagged before any digging. Contact MISS DIG 811, which is free, before you pull footings, piers or ground anchors.
