PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Warren asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Warren lists demolition among work that needs a building permit, with no shed exemption. A residential demolition permit is $250, and a hired crew needs a City wrecking license.

Not confirmed. Warren's curbside rules cover furniture, appliances and carpet but say nothing about lumber or demolition debris. Bricks, rocks and dirt are refused. Call Sanitation at (586) 775-1400.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The Building Division's permit list puts demolition, sheds and garages among work that needs a City building permit, and warns that work without permits can bring fines up to $1,000. The only small-structure exemption it lists is for playhouses under 120 sq ft, which is about building, not tearing down. Miscellaneous fees effective April 3, 2024 set residential demolition permits at $250.

A wrecking permit can go to a City-licensed wrecker or to the owner of the land. Section 9-455 lets the owner wreck a minor building with family help; a frame building up to two stories and 25,000 cubic feet counts as minor. Any independent contractor doing the work must hold a Warren wrecking license.
Warren Code of Ordinances Ch. 9, Art. IX: Wrecking Buildings ↗
The demolition application asks about accessory buildings on site and requires shut-off notices for electric, gas and the water meter where they apply. Inspections need 24 hours' notice at (586) 574-4504; the form lists a pre-demolition check, sewer cap, backfill and final.
Not confirmed. Warren's own Sanitation Division collects trash, and items too big for the cart, such as carpets, appliances, furniture and mattresses, go neatly beside it by 6 a.m. on collection day. Its rules don't mention lumber, siding or demolition debris, and dirt, sod, bricks, rocks, tires and hazardous waste are never collected. Call Sanitation at (586) 775-1400 before setting out a shed's worth of boards.
If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Priority Waste transfer station that accepts trash and construction debris (C&D) from haulers, contractors and residents, with scales on site. Tires, paint, liquids and hazardous materials are refused. Concrete isn't mentioned.
Fees: The public works department's 2026 guide lists $95 for the first 2,000 lbs of renovation materials (2,000 lb minimum), prorated after that. An older city page lists $65 for the first 2,000 lbs and $50 for each additional 2,000 lbs. Priority Waste posts no prices.

Warren has no exclusive hauler, but its code says no one may be in the business of wrecking buildings or structures in the city without a City license. An owner may get a permit to wreck a minor building and do the work with family members, but an independent contractor can't do it unless it holds that license. Separately, every soil or refuse truck needs a City license and plate from the City Clerk, $20 a vehicle. The code doesn't say whether a shed counts as a building here, and the City publishes no list of licensed wreckers.

Warren's Recycling Center at 25801 Flanders takes limited amounts of building and construction material from residents who show a driver's license, judged by yard staff. It refuses shingles, nobody helps you unload, and contractors may not use it at all, so a hired crew has to haul elsewhere.
Macomb County Health Department holds household hazardous waste collections by appointment on select Fridays in April to June and September to November, for county households only. Latex paint isn't taken there; Warren says to dry it out and set it at the curb with the lid off. Call 586-469-5236 to book.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Warren's Sanitation page lists private places for concrete: Clancy Clean Crush Cement on Little Mack in Roseville, Joe Davis on Sherwood in Warren, and Unidig on Quinn Road in Clinton Township for concrete, rocks and dirt. The City says to call them for directions, charges and hours.
Residents can try the City Recycling Center on Flanders for small amounts. For a full shed, the City points to two licensed dumps: the Metro (J. Fons) Transfer Center in Detroit and Pine Tree Acres Landfill in Lenox Township.
The City Recycling Center takes scrap metal and aluminum from residents. Warren's Sanitation page also lists S.L.C. Recycling on E. Eight Mile Rd. for metal.
Not under the federal rule for most homes. Michigan EGLE says privately owned homes with four or fewer units aren't subject to the asbestos NESHAP. Cement-board siding or old roofing on a shed can still contain asbestos, so test it before breaking it up.
