SHED REMOVAL IN GRAND RAPIDS

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Grand Rapids shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Grand Rapids requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Grand Rapids ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Grand Rapids asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Grand Rapids rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. Grand Rapids requires a demolition permit to completely demolish a structure, and its form asks for accessory building size. The residential fee is $250 plus a $70 sewer inspection fee.

City pickup

Not confirmed. City bulk pickup takes items with a $40 sticker, each no bigger than 6 ft by 5 ft. Its sticker list names household items and doors, not shed lumber or siding.

Haul it yourself

South Kent Recycling & Waste Center (Kent County DPW). Residents pay by vehicle load for up to 1,400 lb: $30 car trunk, $40 pickup, van or SUV, $40 trailer alone, $50 car and trailer, $60 truck and trailer, then a prorated per-ton charge. Scrap metal is free. Commercial haulers pay $53.64 a ton for construction and demolition debris. Rates effective October 1, 2026; cards add a convenience fee.

Do I need a permit?Grand Rapids demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

A full teardown needs a demolition permit

The Development Center says completely demolishing a structure needs a demolition permit, while partial demolition needs a Renovation Building Permit. The application asks for accessory building size and requires proof of $1 million general liability and $1 million auto insurance, workers' compensation, and a surety equal to the demolition contract cost. The page also says a permit can only be issued with an approved site plan, a City notice to repair or demolish, or a court order. Call 616-456-4100 to confirm how that applies to a backyard shed.

02

Utility cut-offs and site standards

The City needs confirmation that gas, electric and water are cut off before it issues the permit. Its standard conditions say a structure can't be hauled away whole, foundations are razed to two feet below grade, and the lot is filled and graded to blend with its surroundings. Any sewer lateral is capped and inspected; that inspection fee is included in the permit.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Grand Rapids pick up shed debris?

Not confirmed. City bulk pickup needs a $40 sticker per item, and no one item may be larger than 6 ft by 5 ft. The sticker list covers appliances, furniture and household items such as garage doors and wood doors; it doesn't mention lumber, siding or shingles. Construction debris may not go in the recycling cart. Ask 311 (616-456-3000) before you set shed pieces at the curb.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

South Kent Recycling & Waste Center (Kent County DPW)

10300 South Kent Drive, Byron Center, MI 49315

Home of Kent County's only open, active municipal solid waste landfill. It takes trash drop-offs from residents and businesses, plus free scrap metal recycling. The County's guides send treated wood and shingles here or to North Kent for a vehicle-load fee, and take concrete that can't be reused here for free. Asbestos is on the County's unacceptable-waste list, and the County may reject any load.

Fees: Residents pay by vehicle load for up to 1,400 lb: $30 car trunk, $40 pickup, van or SUV, $40 trailer alone, $50 car and trailer, $60 truck and trailer, then a prorated per-ton charge. Scrap metal is free. Commercial haulers pay $53.64 a ton for construction and demolition debris. Rates effective October 1, 2026; cards add a convenience fee.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Closing times are exact, and late unloading costs $45 per 15 minutes. Questions: 616-632-7920.

North Kent Recycling & Waste Center (Kent County DPW)

2908 Ten Mile Road, Rockford, MI 49341

Kent County transfer station that takes trash from residents and businesses and trucks it to a landfill. It also takes scrap metal for free. The County's guides send treated wood and shingles here or to South Kent for a vehicle-load fee. Asbestos is on the County's unacceptable-waste list.

Fees: Same County rate sheet as South Kent: residents pay $30 to $60 per vehicle load for up to 1,400 lb, then a prorated per-ton charge. Scrap metal is free. Commercial haulers pay $53.64 a ton for construction and demolition debris. Rates effective October 1, 2026.

Before you go: Open Monday to Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Late unloading costs $45 per 15 minutes. Questions: 616-632-7920.

Full Circle Recycle (recycling aggregates)

3233 Broadmoor Avenue SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49512 (second site: 740 Ann Street NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504)

Listed by Kent County as an outlet for concrete. The County says it accepts concrete, asphalt, clay, quartz, ceramic and porcelain items, stone and gravel, and no metal, rubber or plastic. That fits a broken-up shed slab or pier blocks, not lumber.

Fees: Not published on the County page.

Before you go: Call 616-868-2277 for hours and any charge before you load a slab. Pull out rebar, anchor bolts and wood first.

PADNOS Burton Recycling Center

719 Burton St SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Scrap yard that buys scrap metal, including aluminum, copper, brass and steel. A metal shed's panels and framing, broken down and stripped of wood and plastic, are scrap metal. It doesn't take wood or other building debris.

Fees: No disposal fee: PADNOS weighs scrap metal and pays for it. Rates aren't posted on the location page.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enter from Burton Street and stop at the scale. Call (616) 452-6037.

What else should I know in Grand Rapids?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Hired haulers need a City Solid Waste Hauler License

Grand Rapids has no exclusive demolition-debris hauler, but its code says no one may be in the business of collecting, transporting or disposing of solid waste in the city without a Solid Waste Hauler License from the City Clerk. The code's rubbish definition includes wood and demolished building materials. A new license costs $478 ($208 to renew) and needs $1,000,000 liability insurance and a vehicle list. Kent County separately licenses waste haulers and their vehicles every year. Neither source says whether a crew that tears down a shed and hauls its own debris counts as a hauler.

Historic districts add a separate review

The Historic Preservation Commission reviews exterior work in the city's six historic districts and on landmark buildings. The Demolition Permit page sends anyone demolishing a building filed as historic to the Commission for Historic Demolition Approval, and the Commission considers demolition only under four criteria such as a safety hazard or undue hardship. The FY2027 fee for a Commission demolition review is $1,320. Call Historic Preservation at 616-456-3451 before a shed comes down in a district.

Kent County drop-offs take most of a shed

Kent County's guides send treated wood and shingles to its two trash drop-offs, North Kent in Rockford and South Kent in Byron Center, for a fee by vehicle load. Scrap metal is free at both. Concrete that can't be reused goes to South Kent for free. Asbestos is on the County's unacceptable list.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Grand Rapids?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp lists $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Kent County, depending on size, condition and type.

Where can I take the debris myself?

South Kent Recycling & Waste Center in Byron Center and North Kent in Rockford take residents' trash by vehicle load: $40 for a pickup load up to 1,400 lb under the rates effective October 1, 2026. Treated wood and shingles go there too.

What about the concrete slab?

Kent County takes concrete that can't be reused at South Kent for free. It also lists Full Circle Recycle, with sites on Broadmoor Avenue SE and Ann Street NW, for concrete, stone and gravel. Pull out rebar and anchors first.

What about a metal shed?

Scrap metal is free at both County drop-offs. PADNOS Burton Recycling Center at 719 Burton St SW buys scrap metal, including aluminum and steel. Strip off wood and plastic first.

Is an old shed an asbestos job?

Not under the federal rule for most homes. Michigan EGLE says privately owned homes with four or fewer units aren't subject to the asbestos NESHAP. Kent County's landfill and transfer station still list asbestos as unacceptable waste, so test old cement siding or roofing before it goes in a load.

Do I need to call before pulling posts or a slab?

Yes. Michigan law requires utility lines to be flagged before any digging. MISS DIG 811 is free; contact it before you pull footings, posts or ground anchors.

Can I put a new shed in its place?

A shed under 200 square feet needs a zoning permit, and a larger one needs a building permit. Detached sheds stay out of the front yard, at least 3 ft from side and rear lot lines and 6 ft from the house.
