PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Sterling Heights asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Not confirmed for sheds. The City's demolition rules list no shed exemption and let only state-licensed builders or wrecking contractors pull a residential demolition permit. Ask the Building Department at (586) 446-2360.

Partly. Priority Waste takes nail-free boards in bundles up to 4 feet, five bulk items a week. Wood with nails is refused. A paid special pickup runs $137.50 to $275.

J. Fons Transfer Station (Priority Waste). The public works department's 2026 guide lists $95 for the first 2,000 lbs of renovation materials (2,000 lb minimum), prorated after that. An older city page lists $65 for the first 2,000 lbs and $50 for each additional 2,000 lbs. Priority Waste posts no prices.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Macomb County. College HUNKS, Burly Guys and Demo Doctors quote after seeing the shed.
The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The Building Department's demolition sheet says a residential demolition permit can be pulled by a Michigan licensed residential builder or a licensed maintenance and alteration contractor with a house wrecking specialty. A homeowner can pull one only after applying for a new-home permit. The building permit form lists demolition by square footage. No fee or shed exemption is published.

The same sheet lists a water and sewer abandonment permit, gas and electric shut-off letters, a $620 bond and inspections for backfill (to make sure no footings remain) and final. It prints that list under commercial permits, so ask whether it applies to a backyard shed.
City of Sterling Heights: Demolition Permit Requirements (PDF) ↗
The Shed & Garage Packet requires an electrical permit for any electrical work in a shed. It doesn't address removing a circuit, so ask the Building Department before a powered shed is taken apart.
Partly. Priority Waste, the City's hauler, takes bulk items on your regular day at no charge, up to five a week. Boards count if they have no nails or screws and are tied in bundles 4 feet or shorter, under 50 pounds. Wood with nails, brick, block and dirt don't qualify. For a large remodel or cleanout, the City suggests a special pickup from Priority Waste ($137.50 to $275, call 586-228-1200) or a dumpster.

Sterling Heights has no exclusive demolition-debris hauler, but its code says no one may be in the business of collecting waste in the city without a City license, filed with the City Clerk, and no one may hire an unlicensed collector. Owners may still contract for private collection that follows City code. Separately, the Building Department lets only a state-licensed residential builder, or a maintenance and alteration contractor with a house wrecking specialty, pull a residential demolition permit.

The bulk rules in City code say lumber must have all nails, screws and fasteners removed, in tied bundles no more than 50 pounds, 3 feet long and 3 feet around. The City's cart FAQ allows bundles up to 4 feet. Cutting to 3 feet meets both.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

Not under the federal rule for most homes. Michigan EGLE says privately owned homes with four or fewer units aren't subject to the asbestos NESHAP. Cement-board siding or old roofing on a shed can still contain asbestos, so test it before breaking it up.

Yes. Michigan law requires utility lines to be flagged before any digging. MISS DIG 811 is free; contact it before you pull footings, posts or ground anchors.
A shed of 50 square feet or less needs no permit but must meet setbacks: 3 feet from the side line, 6 feet from the back line and out of easements, and 10 feet from the house. A bigger shed needs a building permit, a concrete pad and a rat wall.
