PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Apex asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Apex's demolition permit requires an inspection before any structure comes down, to confirm all utilities are cut off, plus an asbestos report. The Town lists the demolition permit at $150.

No. Apex's paid bulk pickup doesn't collect construction, demolition or remodeling materials. It can take shed contents like furniture for a $30 trip fee.
Wake County Convenience Center, Site 2. No fee is listed on the County page.

Others here: Oak City Hauling publishes $650 to $950 to demolish and haul a standing 10x12 shed, or $299 to $549 if it's already down. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Wake County.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Apex uses a separate application for demolition. Before any structure is demolished, the Town inspects to confirm every utility has been properly terminated. The application calls for an asbestos report, Planning Department sign-off, and Water Resources approval of erosion control measures before the permit is issued and before site work starts (919-362-8166, option 4). Work costing over $40,000 also needs a lien form and workers' comp papers. Apply through Building Inspections & Permitting, (919) 249-3418.
Town of Apex: Demolition Permit Application (PDF) ↗Town of Apex: Obtaining a Building Permit ↗
The Planning section of the demolition form asks whether the site is on a historic registry and whether it lies in the Small Town Character Overlay District, and Planning can add conditions. If your home is in or near downtown or is a listed historic property, call Planning at (919) 249-3426 before you schedule the teardown.
Apex says all installations or modifications to electrical systems require a permit, and the demolition form has an electrical section for the contractor who disconnects the shed. If posts or a slab will be dug out, request an NC811 locate; NC811 notes that private lines on private property, like a buried feed to a shed, aren't marked.
Town of Apex: Building Code Inspections FAQ ↗Town of Apex: Demolition Permit Application (PDF) ↗NC811 ↗
No. Apex Public Works picks up large household items from the curb by request, but its list of items not collected starts with construction, demolition and remodeling materials. The service costs a $30 trip fee for one or two items or $15 an item for three or more, added to your utility bill, and isn't available to businesses or apartments. Staff won't go onto private property, so items must be at the curb by 6 a.m. Shed contents such as furniture can go; the lumber, siding and shingles can't.
If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Apex's code says no one may collect or haul garbage on Town streets without a permit from the Town Council. The same article defines garbage to exclude building material scraps, and makes removing scrap building materials the owner's job, so it's unclear whether the permit reaches a crew hauling shed debris. The Town publishes no list of permit holders; GFL is its contracted household garbage collector. Wake County separately requires anyone collecting solid waste for others to hold a $100 Solid Waste Hauler's Privilege License; most companies listed here are on the County's list.

Apex supplies electricity to most homes inside Town limits, but a few subdivisions, such as Waterford Green, Beckett Crossing, Carriage Downs and Sunset Hills, aren't on Town electric. The demolition permit form asks whether the Town of Apex Electrical Division or Duke Energy will disconnect the structure's power, so know your supplier before you apply for a wired shed.

Wake County's Convenience Center Site 2 (6120 Old Smithfield Road) and the South Wake Multi-Material Recycling Facility (6130 Old Smithfield Road) both have Apex addresses. Site 2 takes homeowner construction debris and scrap metal; the recycling facility takes scrap metal. Liberty Waste Solutions' C&D transfer station at 520 Pristine Water Dr. in Apex takes contractor loads and concrete for a fee.

Wake County accepts construction and demolition debris only from Wake County homeowners. Its resources page says that excludes tenants and contractors working for homeowners, and its convenience center rules allow a contractor's load only if the homeowner is there at drop-off. Debris a removal company hauls goes to a private facility such as Liberty's Apex site.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
