PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Raleigh asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes, for a shed over 12 feet in any direction. Raleigh's residential demolition permit covers accessory structures that size, for $150 plus a 4% technology surcharge. For smaller sheds, ask 919-996-2500.

Others here: Oak City Hauling lists $299 to $549 to haul away a shed that's already down, and $650 to $950 to tear down a standing 10x12. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 in Wake County.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Raleigh's residential demolition permit covers removing a home in whole or part and its incidental accessory buildings, including accessory structures with a dimension over 12 feet. The application needs a site plan or survey marking each structure to be removed and the disturbed area; a survey used as the site plan must be sealed by a North Carolina licensed surveyor. The City's checklist says only one demolition can be permitted per parcel. Stormwater buffers or tree protection may be required, and City trees near the work must be shown with protection fencing. A homeowner acting as their own contractor files an Owner Exemption Affidavit.

Any exterior change in a Raleigh historic overlay district or to a Raleigh Historic Landmark needs a Certificate of Appropriateness before work starts, whatever other permits apply. Removing a shed that isn't character-defining is Minor Work, decided by staff for a $46 application fee plus surcharge. Work that isn't on the Minor Work list goes to the COA Committee as Major Work; a demolition COA costs $968. Call the Historic Preservation team at 919-996-4478.

Raleigh lists circuit work, such as adding circuits or outlets, among projects that need a permit but no plans. It doesn't say how removing or capping a circuit to a shed is handled, so ask the Permit Helpline at 919-996-2500 or use a licensed electrician before the walls come down.
Before digging out piers, posts or a slab, contact NC811 (811 or 1-800-632-4949) three working days ahead so utilities can mark buried lines for free.
No. Raleigh's Bulky Load ($35) and Special Load ($70) pickups are for household items, and both lists exclude construction and demolition debris; Special Loads also exclude building material of any kind and debris from a contractor's work. Treated lumber, concrete and brick are on the City's never-collected list. City code adds that Solid Waste Services won't collect building rubbish or demolition material, and the owner or contractor must dispose of it properly. Questions go to 919-996-3245.

No City or County franchise for construction and demolition debris was found. Raleigh's code says no one may run a business hauling waste in the City without a permit from the City Manager, and it defines waste broadly. The City doesn't publish how to get that permit or who holds one. Wake County separately requires a $100-a-year Solid Waste Hauler's Privilege License to collect waste for hire, and its ordinance counts construction and demolition waste as solid waste. Neither source says whether a removal company hauling its own teardown debris is covered.

Wake County's convenience centers take household construction debris only from Wake County homeowners, at five of its 11 sites. Renters, haulers and contractors are turned away unless the homeowner is there, and you fill out a Waste Verification Form. Debris from a hired crew must go to one of the private construction and demolition sites the County lists, most of them in southeast Raleigh.
