SHED REMOVAL IN CARY

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Cary shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Cary requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Cary ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

Get our price.

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

03

We haul it away.

We confirm a date, take the shed down, load every piece and leave the spot clean.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Cary asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Cary rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Likely yes for larger sheds. Cary requires a permit to demolish any building, but exempts residential accessory buildings no more than 12 feet in any dimension. It doesn't say whether that exemption covers teardown.

City pickup

No. Cary won't collect wood or lumber, scrap metal, concrete or asphalt shingles at the curb. Paid bulky pickup is for items like furniture, grills and swing sets.

Haul it yourself

Wake County Convenience Center Site 4. No fee is listed on the County's pages. Residency is verified, and construction debris requires a Waste Verification Form.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: Oak City Hauling publishes $650 to $950 to demolish and haul a standing 10x12 shed, or $299 to $549 if it's already down. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Wake County.

Do I need a permit?Cary demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Demolition permit and the 12-foot exemption

The Town's Building Permits page says state law requires a permit before the removal or demolition of any building. The same page lists residential accessory buildings no more than 12 feet in any dimension among projects that need no building permit, but it doesn't say whether that applies to tearing one down. A typical 10x12 shed with a peaked roof may still pass 12 feet in one direction. Ask Inspections & Permits through 311 before you start, since Cary charges double permit fees for work started without a permit.

02

Wiring to the shed needs a trade permit

Cary's permit page says a permit is needed for the installation, extension, alteration or general repair of any electrical wiring, devices or equipment. If the shed has a light or outlet, have the circuit made safe by a licensed electrician before teardown. If posts or a slab will be dug out, request an NC811 locate; NC811 notes that private lines on private property, like a buried feed to a shed, aren't marked.

03

Historic landmark properties need a COA first

Cary protects designated Cary Historic Landmarks. On a landmark property, no structure may be demolished until a Certificate of Appropriateness is approved, whether or not a building permit is needed. The Town's guide treats removing an outbuilding that isn't architecturally or historically significant as minor work approved by staff; a significant one goes to the Historic Preservation Commission. Call (919) 469-4066.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Cary pick up shed debris?

No. Cary's collection policy says the Town won't collect earth, rocks, masonry, concrete, scrap metal, wood or lumber, or construction materials such as asphalt shingles, whether they're in a cart or at the curb. Bulky trash pickup, by appointment through 311, costs $15 for the first item and $8 for each extra item, and covers things too big for the cart like furniture, gas grills, bicycles and swing sets. That can take shed contents, but not the shed itself.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

What else should I know in Cary?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Only the Town may haul solid waste for pay, unless it authorizes you

Cary's code says the Town collects all solid waste in Town limits, and that no one other than the Town may collect, haul and dispose of solid waste from Town limits for pay unless the Town Manager authorizes it in writing with Town Council approval. The code doesn't say whether this reaches a crew hauling away the shed it tore down, and the Town publishes no list of authorized haulers. Wake County separately requires anyone collecting solid waste for others in the county to hold a $100 Solid Waste Hauler's Privilege License; most companies listed here appear on the County's licensed-hauler list.

The Town drop-off center closes to most waste on January 1, 2027

Cary's Citizen's Convenience Center on N. Dixon Ave. stays open as usual through December 31, 2026, because of railroad work in the right-of-way. From January 1, 2027, only food and yard waste drop-off remains. Even now it refuses construction and remodeling debris, shingles, treated lumber and concrete products, and bars private contractors, box trucks and enclosed trailers. The Town points residents to Wake County's sites in Apex and Morrisville instead.

Cary spans three counties

Cary has addresses in Wake, Chatham and Durham counties, and residents are served by the county they live in, including for the landfill. Wake County's convenience centers are for Wake County residents. If your home is in the Chatham or Durham County part of Cary, check your own county's drop-off sites before loading the truck.

County sites take shed debris only from homeowners

Wake County accepts construction and demolition debris only from Wake County homeowners. Its resources page says that excludes tenants and contractors working for homeowners, and its convenience center rules allow a contractor's load only if the homeowner is there at drop-off. Debris a removal company hauls goes to a private facility instead; Wake County lists Liberty Waste Solutions' Apex site and others.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Cary?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, Oak City Hauling lists $650 to $950 to demolish and haul a standing 10x12 shed. If the shed is already down, it charges $299 for an 8x8, $465 for a 10x12 and $549 for a 12x16. Count Junkula says large items like sheds often start around $500. Junk Terminators says shed removal typically runs $200 to $2,000, quoted on site. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Wake County, lower if it's already taken apart.

What does a demolition permit cost in Cary?

Cary's FY2027 fee schedule has no line for tearing down a shed. For one- and two-family homes it lists a $200 minimum to demolish a dwelling and a $125 minimum building fee for other accessory buildings or structures, and it charges double for work started without a permit. Ask 311 which fee applies to your shed.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

If you own your home in the Wake County part of Cary, County convenience centers Site 4 (3600 Yates Mill Pond Road, Raleigh) and Site 2 (6120 Old Smithfield Road, Apex) take household construction debris from homeowners, with a verification form. Both are open daily, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Bring a car, pickup or single-axle trailer; a box truck, dual-axle or enclosed trailer needs a free Trash Pass first. Bulky pieces must be under 8 feet.

Where does a concrete slab or block foundation go?

Not to the curb or a County convenience center: neither takes concrete, bricks or pavers. Liberty Waste Solutions' Apex facility at 520 Pristine Water Dr. takes concrete, bricks and C&D debris for $51 a ton with a 1-ton minimum plus a 5% environmental fee. It won't take painted concrete or painted wood.

Can I recycle a metal shed?

Yes. Wake County convenience centers take scrap metal, and the South Wake Multi-Material Recycling Facility at 6130 Old Smithfield Road in Apex takes scrap metal from residents and businesses, Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Keep metal panels apart from wood and shingles.

What about paint, gas and chemicals left in the shed?

Cary won't collect household hazardous waste at the curb, and Wake County convenience centers turn away paint, gas, propane tanks and chemicals. Take them to a Wake County Household Hazardous Waste facility. Drain gas and oil from mowers before the metal goes to scrap.
