PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Concord asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Not confirmed. Cabarrus County Construction Standards, which permits all of the county, offers a residential demolition permit but doesn't publish when a shed needs one. Call 704-920-2128.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Cabarrus County Construction Standards enforces the NC State Building Code across the county, and its Accela portal takes residential building permit applications for demolition as well as accessory structures such as sheds. Neither the County nor the City publishes a size exemption for tearing down a shed, a demolition fee or a rule on disconnecting wiring. Ask Construction Standards at 704-920-2128 before the teardown, especially if the shed has a circuit or a water line.

North Carolina's Health Hazards Control Unit tells owners to notify it of building demolition, even if no asbestos is present, at least 10 working days before work starts, and says a local permit doesn't meet that requirement. The page doesn't say whether a backyard shed counts as a building for this notice, so ask the unit before demolishing an old shed with suspect siding or roofing.

Concord's code bars construction debris containing asbestos from curbside collection, and the City's construction debris service doesn't cover large remodeling projects.
Before digging out piers, posts or a slab, contact NC811 (811 or 1-800-632-4949) three working days ahead so utilities can mark buried lines for free.
Yes, in small amounts, for homes on City service. Bulky waste is picked up every other week on your recycling day, with no booking. Up to 4 cubic yards of construction debris goes free, within a 10 cubic yard total with other bulky items; City code limits this to debris from small householder repairs or small renovation projects. Remove or bend nails, bag or box loose pieces, keep each bag or box under 35 pounds and each item under 65 pounds, and remove all concrete. For more than 4 cubic yards, the City sends you to Waste Pro (980-255-3800) for a paid roll-off.

Concord's own crews collect household trash, recycling and bulky waste, and its solid waste code sets up no license or franchise for private haulers. Loads too big for curbside go in roll-offs from private contractors at the owner's expense. Cabarrus County requires a County license and a franchise for anyone who collects or transports solid waste, but its code applies that chapter to unincorporated areas plus Harrisburg, Mount Pleasant and Kannapolis, not the City of Concord. Homes with a Concord mailing address outside City limits may fall under the County rule.

In Concord, the City reviews construction applications for zoning and Cabarrus County Construction Standards reviews them for building, through one Accela submission. Concord has three historic districts: North Union Street, South Union Street and Edgewood. The City's historic handbook says Historic Preservation Commission approval is required for any demolition, and its approval list puts demolition of any building or part of one in the Commission hearing category. It also names sheds among the detached accessory buildings it covers.

The City's FAQ says the Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill is owned and run by Republic Services, and Concord's host agreement covers free disposal of single-family residential waste collected within City limits. It doesn't describe public drop-off, so homeowners hauling shed debris themselves should use the County landfill on Irish Potato Road.
