PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Gastonia asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Residential demolition needs a City of Gastonia zoning permit ($50 work-item fee) and then a Gaston County demolition permit ($50 in FY26). Call the County at 704-866-3155.

Partly. City crews may collect a homeowner's lumber cut to 4 feet and a collapsed shed up to 10 by 10 feet, but not roofing, concrete or debris from a contractor's work.
Gaston County Landfill. Commercial and demolition debris: $46 a ton, half-ton ($23) minimum. Out-of-county waste: $60 a ton, $30 minimum. $200 surcharge for an uncovered or unsecured load.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Residential demolition is on the City's list of work that starts with a Gastonia zoning permit; the County can't start the building permit until the City issues it. The City's FY 2026 fee schedule lists Demolition (Residential) at $50, and Gaston County's FY26 schedule lists a residential demolition permit at $50, down from $90. The County's $15 technology fee doesn't apply to demolition permits. Working without a City permit doubles the fee.

Whoever signs the County's demolition application certifies the property will comply with North Carolina and federal asbestos rules for the demolition. The application says it's the applicant's job to contact the state Health Hazards Control Unit for any permit needed for asbestos removal. Old cement-board siding or roofing on a shed is worth asking about.
Electrical and other single-trade permits in Gastonia go straight to Gaston County, not the City. Have a shed circuit made safe before teardown. Before digging out posts or a slab, request an NC811 locate; NC811 notes that private lines on private property, such as a buried feed to the shed, aren't marked.

Some of it. City code allows curbside collection of building materials from a homeowner's own work, including lumber and a collapsed accessory building up to 10 by 10 feet, if boards are cut to 4 feet and the pile is no bigger than 4 by 4 by 8 feet. The City won't collect roofing, concrete, concrete-set posts, boards with protruding nails, sheetrock, pallets, or anything from contractor or commercial work. Bulky pickup isn't free except during two free weeks a year; the fee schedule lists excess household trash at $15 up to 100 pounds and $25 over. Call Customer Care, 704-866-6714.

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

County landfill serving residents and businesses. Gaston County sends construction and demolition material, such as wood and carpet, here because its convenience sites don't take it. Whole sheds and concrete aren't named on its page; call before bringing slab pieces.

Gastonia's code makes it a misdemeanor for anyone not authorized by the City to collect solid waste, including recyclables, yard waste and bulky items. The only exception written in is private haulers serving businesses' bulk containers. The section doesn't mention construction or demolition debris, and the City's building-materials rule says it won't collect debris from a contractor's work, which the owner or contractor must remove. Ask Customer Care, 704-866-6714, how this applies to a hired removal crew.

Gaston County Building Inspections enforces the state building code inside Gastonia. For residential demolition and detached accessory buildings, you start with a zoning permit from the City of Gastonia through its permitting portal (704-866-6729), then take it to the County. The County's demolition application asks for that zoning permit.

Unusually, Gastonia's code lets City crews collect building materials from a homeowner's own repair work, including lumber and collapsed accessory buildings up to 10 by 10 feet that two people can handle. Boards must be cut to 4 feet or less, and one day's pile can't be bigger than about a pickup bed (4 by 4 by 8 feet). Roofing, concrete, nails, sheetrock and pallets aren't collected.
City code makes it unlawful to keep or operate a site for burying material from building construction, renovation or demolition. Clean fill is the only exception. Shed lumber, roofing and broken slab have to be hauled away.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
