PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Huntersville asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Huntersville rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. Mecklenburg County requires a separate demolition permit for each structure torn down, pulled by a bonded contractor rather than a homeowner account. It lists $500 for a structure under 500 sq ft.

City pickup

No. Huntersville's paid bulk pickup ($40 minimum) refuses lumber, shingles, treated wood, concrete, and construction or demolition debris. Shed contents like bikes and exercise equipment can go.

Haul it yourself

North Mecklenburg Disposal and Recycling Center (Mecklenburg County). County residents (free blue sticker): C&D $25 per pickup-size load under 3 cubic yards, or $65 a ton with a $26 minimum when weighed. Business and commercial loads: C&D $45 per load under 3 cubic yards, or $65 a ton with a $36 minimum. Trailers over 8 ft are weighed. Out-of-county residents can buy a $120 annual sticker. Fees may rise 50% for an uncovered load. Cards only.

Do I need a permit?Huntersville demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

One demolition permit per structure, pulled by a contractor

Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement issues permits for Huntersville. Its demolition primer says tearing down a structure requires a building permit and that each accessory structure needs its own demolition permit. A bond holder must apply, and customers with a homeowner account can't apply for a demolition permit. All agency holds must clear before the permit issues, and a final inspection is scheduled when the work is done. For help, call 980-314-CODE (2633).

02

Air Quality review and asbestos

The County's demolition package includes a Mecklenburg County Air Quality questionnaire; if every answer is no, the NESHAP notification form isn't needed. Air Quality says residential buildings with four or fewer units aren't a 'facility' under the asbestos rules, and offers a residential applicability form if you're unsure. When notice is required, it's due 10 working days before demolition with an asbestos inspection report. Call 704-336-5430.

03

Wiring to the shed

The County says a homeowner needs an electrical permit any time they remove or change permanent wiring in or attached to the home or an out-building. Have the shed circuit made safe before teardown. If posts or a slab will be dug out, request an NC811 locate; NC811 notes that private lines on private property, like a buried feed to a shed, aren't marked.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Huntersville pick up shed debris?

No. The Town's bulk pickup runs Mondays for a $40 minimum fee, paid in advance by Sunday at midnight. Its list of items not accepted includes lumber, shingles, treated wood, wooden pallets, brick, block, concrete, and construction and demolition debris, and the Town says construction debris isn't household waste. Shed contents such as furniture, appliances, bicycles and exercise equipment are fine. Lumber and shingles can go to the County's North Mecklenburg center.

What else should I know in Huntersville?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

No franchised hauler for demolition debris found

Huntersville's garbage, recycling and yard waste carts are collected by Waste Connections, and the Town runs its own paid bulk pickup. The Town's code of ordinances has no garbage or hauler chapter that grants anyone rights to demolition debris. Mecklenburg County requires a Certificate to Operate only for companies collecting household-type trash, and says one isn't needed to collect construction and demolition debris or bulky waste.

The Town signs off on zoning, the County issues the permit

Building and demolition permits for Huntersville addresses come from Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement, after the Town of Huntersville approves the zoning review. The County's residential demolition checklist asks applicants in Huntersville and the other northern towns to get the town's approval first. Huntersville Planning answers at 704-875-7000 or permits@huntersville.org.

A collapsing shed can be a nuisance

Huntersville's nuisance ordinance lists rotten, damaged or dilapidated sheds and outbuildings that have collapsed, partly collapsed, or pose a fire risk or a danger to children or neighbors. The same section counts piles of lumber and building materials as a nuisance unless they come from work under a building permit, so don't leave teardown debris sitting in the yard.

The County drop-off center is on Statesville Road

The North Mecklenburg Disposal and Recycling Center at 12300 N. Statesville Road in Huntersville takes construction and demolition debris, wood, shingles and scrap metal, sorted by type. Improvements are under way there, and business loads and dump trailers aren't allowed on Saturdays during construction.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Huntersville?

Junk Raider starts shed removal at $150, including the floor and skids, and prices a concrete slab separately by weight.

What does the demolition permit cost?

The County fee ordinance, revised July 1, 2026, charges per structure. Under 500 sq ft the total is $500: $125 Code Enforcement, $150 Air Quality, $100 Environmental Health and $125 Historic Landmarks. From 500 to 4,999 sq ft it's $700. Ask Code Enforcement whether every part applies to a Huntersville shed.

Where can I haul shed debris myself?

Mecklenburg County's full-service centers take sorted construction and demolition debris. County residents pay $25 for a pickup-size load under 3 cubic yards, or $65 a ton ($26 minimum) when weighed. Trailers over 8 ft are weighed, and North Mecklenburg and Hickory Grove take trailers up to 12 ft. Cards only, no cash or checks. Mixed loads are charged the C&D rate.

Where does a concrete slab go?

Huntersville's bulk pickup won't take concrete. The County's Foxhole Landfill on Lancaster Highway takes it: residents may bring small quantities of concrete in a pickup or 10 ft trailer, and businesses pay $9.50 a ton. The landfill is open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Can I recycle a metal shed?

Yes. The County's full-service centers list scrap metal among accepted items, such as bicycle frames, grills, mowers and pipes. Keep the metal separate from wood and shingles when you unload. If panels are large, email a photo to the County first; it usually answers within 4 hours on weekdays.

What about old paint, gas and chemicals in the shed?

Huntersville's bulk pickup won't take gas cans, paint cans or hazardous materials. Mecklenburg County residents can drop household hazardous waste at the full-service centers at no charge, including up to 100 pounds of paint and up to 10 gallons of gasoline a day.
