PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Greensboro asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Greensboro requires a permit to demolish any building or structure, and its fee schedule lists demolition permits at $85. The owner, a state-licensed builder or a demolition contractor can pull it.

Not for a whole shed. Crews take two 32-gallon cans of DIY debris on bulk day. For a shed teardown, a supervisor can price a paid pickup; contractor debris isn't collected.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Greensboro, not Guilford County, issues permits inside the city. Its permit FAQ says a building permit is needed for all work involving the removal or demolition of any building or structure, and no shed-size exemption for demolition is published. The fee schedule lists demolition permits at $85, and building permit fees double if work starts before the permit is issued. Development Services is at 300 W. Washington St., 336-373-2155.

The City's procedures say demolition permits can be taken out by a state-licensed building contractor, a demolition contractor or the property owner. A demolition contractor must have a $5,000 bond on file. The application also names who will dispose of the debris and seed or grade the lot.

The City says the contractor or owner must give it an asbestos report from a state-accredited asbestos inspector and is responsible for any asbestos removal. Separately, North Carolina's Health Hazards Control Unit tells owners to notify it of building demolition, even if no asbestos is found, at least 10 working days before work, and says a local permit doesn't meet that requirement. Neither source says how a small backyard shed is treated.

All electrical, plumbing and mechanical work needs its own trade permit in Greensboro, so a shed with a circuit or water line needs one to disconnect it. Call NC811 three working days before digging out posts, piers or a slab.

Only small amounts. City crews collect DIY construction debris in up to two 32-gallon cans, each 50 pounds or less, on your recycling and bulk day; bags, boxes and contractor debris aren't taken. For a larger job, the City's page names tearing down a shed: call 336-373-CITY (2489) and a solid waste supervisor will look at the material and give a price for a paid pickup. City code sets special off-street bulk service at $125 for up to one City truckload.

Greensboro has no franchise for construction or demolition debris. City code makes it unlawful to haul refuse commercially on City streets without 'the necessary licenses to do work in the city', but Chapter 25 sets up no hauler license or permit, and its section on unauthorized collection is reserved. City crews won't collect debris from jobs done by professional contractors; the contractor is responsible for disposal. Guilford County licenses garbage collectors only for homes outside cities and towns.
Greensboro City Code Chapter 25: Solid Wastes ↗Guilford County: Residential garbage (licensed collectors) ↗
The City's demolition permit application asks whether the property is a landmark or sits in a local or national historic district. It says the owner is responsible for checking the property's historic status and getting a Certificate of Appropriateness if one is required.
A June 2026 change to City code says that beginning February 1, 2027, bulk trash will be collected on an on-call basis only, by calling 336-373-CITY. A pickup bigger than 4 cubic yards counts as a special large pickup and carries a fee.
Everyone unloading at the White Street Landfill or the Transfer Station must wear a high-visibility vest or outerwear and closed-toe shoes. Loads must be covered and secured, and every vehicle stops at the scale.
Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
