PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what High Point asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. High Point uses a Demolished Structure permit to take down a structure, and the fee for a residential one is $100. No shed-size exemption for demolition is published.

Not for a whole shed. The City says it doesn't pick up construction and demolition debris, and a contractor must haul away its own waste.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
City code says no one may remove or demolish any building or structure without a permit from the director of inspections. Build High Point handles this through its Demolished Structure process, which covers complete demolition of a residential or commercial structure. The residential fee is $100. A small accessory building 12 feet or less in every dimension needs only a $25 zoning permit to build, but the City doesn't say that exemption applies to tearing one down.

The application asks for a site plan showing the structure and a letter or email from every utility provider confirming that electric, gas, water and sewer are disconnected. Electrical work must be done by a state-licensed contractor unless the owner qualifies for the owner-occupied exemption. Two inspections follow: one after the shed comes down but before any footing holes are backfilled, and a final one to check the grade. Call NC811 three working days before digging out posts or piers.

High Point asks for a copy of the state asbestos demolition notice only for commercial demolitions. North Carolina's Health Hazards Control Unit tells owners to notify it of building demolition, even if no asbestos is found, at least 10 working days before work, and says a local permit doesn't meet that requirement. Neither source says how a backyard shed is treated.

Not a whole shed. The City's FAQ says it does not pick up construction and demolition debris and points to the GFL facility on Riverdale Drive. The bulk pickup page allows lumber from a resident's own project if it's cut to 8 feet or less, but bulk pickup is meant for occasional items, not cleanouts. Any waste made by a contractor must be hauled off by that contractor. Questions: 336-883-3111.

High Point has no franchise for construction or demolition debris. City code requires a Public Services permit only for companies that collect bulk, roll-off or detachable containers. It also says waste collected in the City by public or authorized private collectors goes to the City's landfill, compost site or recycling center unless the Public Services director allows otherwise. Guilford County licenses garbage collectors only for homes outside its cities and towns.

A Certificate of Appropriateness is required before a demolition permit if the property is in a local historic district or is a Guilford County Historic Landmark. The City's application names Johnson Street, Sherrod Park and West High Avenue as local historic districts.
