SHED REMOVAL IN MENTOR

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Mentor shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Mentor requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Mentor ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Mentor asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Mentor rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Not confirmed: Mentor's code and fee schedule don't say whether tearing down a shed needs a permit, though the City's permit form lists demolition. Ask Engineering & Building at 440-974-5785.

City pickup

No. Waste Management's weekly bulk pickup in Mentor bars construction or demolition debris, so shed lumber, roofing and siding can't go to the curb.

Haul it yourself

Lake County Solid Waste Facility (Lake County Landfill). $5 minimum for a car load up to 330 lbs; $10 minimum for a pickup load up to 660 lbs; $30 a ton for waste generated in Lake County and $40 a ton plus fees for other Ohio waste.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Lake County. Junk Gone Today lists construction debris loads from $150 for a quarter truck; the others quote from photos, by phone or on site.

Do I need a permit?Mentor demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

What Mentor's code says about demolition

Mentor's building permit rule covers work that erects, constructs, alters, moves, converts, extends, equips or enlarges a building; it doesn't list demolition. The state residential code Mentor adopts likewise lists building work but not demolition in its approval rule, and it exempts one-story tool and storage sheds up to 200 square feet from approval when they're built. Still, the City's building permit form has a Demolition box, the fee schedule prices complete dwelling demolitions at $60 plus $10 per 100 square feet, and the deposit table charges $50 for demolitions up to 500 square feet. None of these mentions taking down a shed, so call Engineering & Building at 440-974-5785 before work starts.

03

Who may do the work

Mentor's contractor rule covers anyone who builds, alters, adds to or subtracts from a building or structure for the public. Registration needs a $10,000 bond, liability insurance and a $100 first-year fee. A homeowner doing the work, or friends helping without pay, are exempt from registration but not from the building code or its inspections.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Mentor pick up shed debris?

No. Waste Management collects trash, recycling, yard waste and bulk items such as appliances and furniture weekly for Mentor's single-family homes. But the City's bulk rules list construction or demolition debris as prohibited, which covers a torn-down shed. Questions about your service go to Waste Management at (866) 797-9018.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Lake County Solid Waste Facility (Lake County Landfill)

2039 Blase Nemeth Rd., Painesville, OH 44077

Lake County's public landfill. It prices pre-approved construction and demolition debris the same as other weighed waste, but it turns away whole-building construction and demolition debris that hasn't been pre-approved, along with paint, liquids, hazardous waste and yard waste. It also has free recycling bins for Lake County residents.

Fees: $5 minimum for a car load up to 330 lbs; $10 minimum for a pickup load up to 660 lbs; $30 a ton for waste generated in Lake County and $40 a ton plus fees for other Ohio waste.

Before you go: Call (440) 350-2644 to ask about pre-approval before bringing teardown debris. Open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturdays are for Lake County residents in cars and pickups only. All vehicles must be tarped.

Cuyahoga Regional Landfill (WM)

6640 Cochran Rd, Solon, OH 44139

WM's construction and demolition debris landfill. The County lists it as open to the public, and WM lists construction and demolition debris and non-friable asbestos among accepted materials. It takes no hazardous waste.

Fees: Not published. WM's page says it accepts only credit cards at the scale (no American Express).

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with cash-on-delivery customers 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; closed weekends. Call (440) 498-5700 for prices.

DeMilta Sand & Gravel

921 Erie Rd., Eastlake, OH 44095

Listed by the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District as a business location that takes concrete for recycling, which suits broken-up shed slabs and footings. Its own site wasn't readable, so what it charges and whether it takes homeowner loads weren't confirmed.

Fees: Not published.

Before you go: Call (440) 942-2015 before you load up to ask whether it takes concrete from homeowners and what it charges.

What else should I know in Mentor?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Haulers need a City refuse licence; no exclusive debris franchise found

Mentor's code says no one may engage in the commercial collection of waste materials without a $50-a-year refuse contractor licence from the Director of Public Works, plus a $15-a-year windshield licence for each vehicle. The City contracts with Waste Management for trash at single-family homes, but no code section or City page gives any company sole rights to haul construction or demolition debris. The code doesn't say whether a one-time shed teardown counts as commercial collection, and the City publishes no list of licensed haulers. Public Works: (440) 974-5781.

The county landfill wants teardown debris pre-approved

Lake County's own landfill on Blase Nemeth Road in Painesville Township is the closest public disposal site. Its fee list prices pre-approved construction and demolition debris the same as other weighed waste, and its refused list includes whole-building construction and demolition debris that hasn't been pre-approved. Call the landfill at (440) 350-2644 before you bring shed debris. Saturdays are for Lake County residents in cars and pickups only.

Ask the City for its registered contractor list

Anyone paid to do regulated work in Mentor must be registered with the City, and the Building Department will send its current list of registered contractors on request: (440) 974-5785. The City warns that a contractor's "bonded and insured" claim may not protect you, because a bond is written for a specific purpose.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Mentor?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Lake County, lower if it's already taken apart. Junk Gone Today's general rates start at $150 for a quarter truckload of construction debris, up to $450 for a full truck. Sergeant Junk and HAUL&JUNK give free estimates, and Ohio Junk Force has an online estimator.

Can I haul the debris to the dump myself?

Yes, after a call. The Lake County landfill charges $5 for a car load up to 330 pounds, $10 for a pickup load up to 660 pounds, and $30 a ton for heavier Lake County waste. It wants construction and demolition debris pre-approved, so phone (440) 350-2644 first. Open weekdays 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tarp every load.

What about the paint, stain and chemicals stored in the shed?

Lake County residents can drop off oil-based paint and stains, aerosol cans, pesticides, fertilizer and motor oil at the landfill on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Latex paint and gasoline aren't taken there; the landfill itself refuses paint and liquids in regular loads.

Can the concrete slab come out too?

Ask when you get a price. Sergeant Junk removes wooden floors and basic platforms but treats a concrete slab as an add-on, and Junk Gone Today quotes concrete separately. For a DIY load, the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District lists DeMilta Sand & Gravel in Eastlake among places that take concrete; call (440) 942-2015 to ask about a homeowner load.

Does an old shed need an asbestos check?

Ohio's asbestos demolition rules don't cover residential buildings with four or fewer homes, and Mentor publishes no asbestos rule for sheds. If old siding or roofing looks like cement board or tar paper, ask Ohio EPA's asbestos program at 614-466-0061.

Who calls 811 before posts or footings are dug out?

Whoever digs. Ohio law puts it on the person doing the excavation to notify OHIO811 at least two working days ahead, not counting the day you call.

Do I need a permit for a new shed in its place?

Yes. Mentor requires a building permit for sheds, with a site plan showing distances to property lines. Permits for kit sheds can be issued when you apply. Sheds under 120 square feet pay a $30 zoning fee; larger ones pay $60 plus $10 per 100 square feet, plus a refundable deposit.
