PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Upper Arlington asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Usually no. City code exempts accessory structures and detached garages under 450 square feet from the demolition permit, unless it's a historic demolition. Larger ones need a $250 residential permit. Call 614-583-5070.

No. The City's bulk pickup rules turn away construction debris and scrap metal, and City code leaves building rubbish for the owner to dispose of.

Franklin County Sanitary Landfill (SWACO). Construction and demolition debris: $39.75 per ton in-district and $43.75 per ton out-of-district. Residents pay a $5 minimum, prorated for loads under a ton. Card payments carry a 3% processing fee.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
City code says no building or detached structure may be demolished without a demolition permit from Community Development, but it exempts any accessory structure or detached garage with less than 450 square feet of floor area, unless the work is a historic demolition. The City's guidance puts it the same way: a permit is needed to demolish any structure over 450 square feet. The residential permit is $250. If you plan a new structure in its place, its planning and building approvals must come first. Community Development asks you to call before acting: 614-583-5070.

For a larger structure, the application asks for statements that utilities are disconnected and that the building was reviewed for hazardous material, plus tree protection and drainage plans. You post the City's notice sign at least ten days before work starts and file a notarized affidavit. A 42-inch safety fence must go around the site, and once work begins it must be finished within ten calendar days. The permit lasts six months.

The Upper Arlington Historic District covers part of the City south of Lane Avenue known as Old Arlington. When a demolition permit is filed there, the Community Development Director first checks the City's map of contributing structures. A historic demolition of a contributing structure faces a 180-day delay and a Board of Zoning and Planning review unless the Board grants a certificate of economic hardship. The 450-square-foot exemption doesn't apply to a historic demolition.

The City's fee page lists electrical and gas line permits from $100 each. If your shed has power or a gas line, ask Community Development whether disconnecting and capping it needs one.
No. Local Waste Services collects furniture, appliances and other bulk items on your regular day as part of the City's program, but the City's bulk list says "No Construction Debris" and also refuses scrap metal. City code adds that rubbish from building or remodeling must be disposed of by the owner at their own expense. Hire a removal company or haul the debris to SWACO's landfill. Call Local Waste at 614-583-5370 about anything else large.

Upper Arlington's trash, recycling, yard waste and bulk pickup is now provided under contract by Local Waste Services. City code requires homes to use the City's collection, and says no one else may collect solid waste, recyclables or yard waste in the City except a private contractor registered with Franklin County and the city manager for premises the City doesn't serve. The code's definition of solid waste excludes construction debris, and it leaves rubbish from building or remodeling for the owner to dispose of at their own expense. So the exclusive rule doesn't, on its face, reach shed teardown debris. It isn't clear whether old household junk stored in the shed counts as solid waste.

City code says demolition contractors must be registered under the business regulation code. The City's fee page lists demolition contracting registration at $100, with a $10,000 bond and $100,000 to $300,000 in liability insurance. A permit can also go to the owner, if the owner does the work alone or with unpaid helpers.

Curbside pickup won't take electronics. The City takes e-waste at the Public Service Center, 4100 Roberts Road, Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., handy for an old radio, charger or TV found in a shed.
Since September 29, 2025, SWACO takes construction and demolition debris only at its Franklin County Sanitary Landfill on London Groveport Road in Grove City. Its transfer stations no longer take it, and residents can't use them anyway.
