SHED REMOVAL IN PITTSBURGH

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Pittsburgh shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Pittsburgh requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Pittsburgh ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Pittsburgh asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Pittsburgh rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Not confirmed: PLI files a residential accessory-structure teardown as a Building and Development Application. Its no-permit list names sheds up to 200 sq ft but doesn't mention demolition. Call PLI at 412-255-2175.

City pickup

No. Environmental Services' bulk pickup does not collect demolition and construction wastes, and it takes only two bulky items a week. Shed debris goes with a hauler or to a transfer station.

Haul it yourself

Michael Brothers Recycling (Baldwin). Not published for debris; call for pricing. Scrap metal is paid by weight at posted sample prices.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Allegheny County. College HUNKS lists $99 to $699 for junk loads; Wolfgang Hauling and Junked Pittsburgh quote each job.

Do I need a permit?Pittsburgh demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

How PLI handles a shed teardown

PLI requires a demolition permit to demolish an entire building or structure, but says demolitions limited to accessory structures on residential property can be filed as a Building and Development Application with an addition/alteration work type. Its 2021 bulletin adds that this work can be done by the owner if the home is their primary residence, or by a Pennsylvania-licensed general contractor. Zoning reviews all demolition applications. PLI's list of work needing no application includes one-story sheds up to 200 sq ft accessory to a one- or two-family home, but that list describes the shed itself and doesn't say it covers tearing one down.

02

What a residential permit costs

PLI's 2026 fee schedule prices residential permits at $6 per $1,000 of construction value, with a $130 minimum. Forty percent is due, non-refundable, when you apply and the rest at issuance. Each permit also carries a $4.50 state training fund fee, a $5 record retention fee and a technology fee that starts at $2.

03

Asbestos rules come from the county

The Allegheny County Health Department, not the state, runs asbestos rules here, and only ACHD-licensed contractors may do abatement. Private homeowners working on their own home are exempt, and a house with four or fewer units isn't treated as a regulated facility unless it's part of a larger project. PLI notes that removing asbestos-containing material may need an ACHD abatement permit. Call ACHD at 412-578-8120 with questions.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Pittsburgh pick up shed debris?

No. Bulk items can go out with your regular trash day, two items a week, but the City lists demolition and construction wastes among the things it does not collect. Extra bulk pickups cost $173 for the first hour, booked at 412-255-2773, and still don't cover construction debris. For shed lumber, roofing and siding, the City points residents to county-authorized transfer stations.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Michael Brothers Recycling (Baldwin)

901 Horning Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236

PA-DEP permitted construction and demolition recycling facility, open to the public and commercial accounts. Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Call (412) 835-6428 before bringing a load.

Fees: Not published; call for pricing.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Call (412) 835-6428 first.

Iron City Express Transfer Station

1306 Main Street, Crescent, PA 15046

Transfer station open to self-haul customers, contractors and the public. It accepts construction and demolition debris and household trash, including wood from buildings, asphalt shingles, concrete, metals, brick, glass, drywall and salvaged doors and windows. Loads contaminated with prohibited waste are rejected at the scale; e-waste is not accepted and mattresses need advance approval.

Fees: Not published; it asks callers to phone for pricing.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed weekends. Call (724) 457-2727 before you go to confirm your load is accepted.

What else should I know in Pittsburgh?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

No franchise hauler, but get a disposal receipt

No Pittsburgh rule was found that gives one company the right to haul demolition debris, and the City doesn't list a hauler license among its PLI licenses. Environmental Services' advice is direct: if you pay someone to take your waste, get a receipt from the disposal facility before you pay in full. The Allegheny County Health Department oversees solid waste vehicles under its Article VIII rules and inspects about 400 of them a year, but its pages don't say whether a junk-hauling truck needs a county license.

City historic districts need Historic Review Commission approval

Exterior work on a property in a City-designated historic district needs approval from the Historic Review Commission, applied for through OneStopPGH. Demolition is reviewed as a Large Project; outbuildings and site work may fall under Accessory Structure Review. Districts include the Mexican War Streets, Manchester, Allegheny West, Deutschtown, Schenley Farms and Murray Hill Avenue.

Hillside lots can need an engineer's report

PLI's demolition rules call for a report from a Pennsylvania-licensed engineer or architect when the structure sits in a City Planning overlay district for landslide-prone ground, steep slopes or undermined areas. Undermined lots also need a state Coal Status Report. Many Pittsburgh backyards are on slopes, so check the parcel before a demolition permit application.

Usable doors and windows can go to Construction Junction

Construction Junction, the nonprofit reuse store at 214 N. Lexington St. in Point Breeze, takes donations of usable building materials such as complete windows and doors. It isn't a dump: staff inspect every item and the store says it does not provide a disposal service. Drop-offs run Tuesday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Pittsburgh?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Allegheny County, lower if it's already taken apart. College HUNKS lists $99 to $699 for junk loads by truck space. Wolfgang Hauling and Demolition and Junked Pittsburgh give free estimates.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

Michael Brothers' recycling yard at 901 Horning Road in Baldwin and its Reserve Township yard at 408 Hoffman Road both sort construction debris and are open to the public, Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Iron City Express in Crescent takes wood, shingles, concrete and metal from self-haul customers on weekdays. None posts a price, so call first.

Can I get paid for a metal shed?

Possibly. All four Michael Brothers yards buy scrap metal by weight on state-certified scales, and the company posts sample prices online, such as clean tin by the pound. A painted steel shed panel is usually a low grade, so expect a small payout.

What about old paint and chemicals in the shed?

Keep them out of the debris pile; bulk pickup won't take household chemicals. The City's vendor, Noble Environmental, runs household hazardous waste drop-offs and events for City residents by appointment, with fees based on material and amount.

Will the concrete pad come out too?

Only if you ask. Wolfgang Hauling lists breaking out the slab, footings or blocks a shed sat on as part of its shed work, and Junked Pittsburgh lists small concrete and paver pad removal. Michael Brothers' and Iron City Express's yards both accept concrete.

Who is allowed to take a shed down?

Under PLI's rules for an accessory-structure teardown, the owner can do the work if the home is their primary residence, or a Pennsylvania-licensed general contractor can. A City general contractor license is required for demolition permits on commercial buildings or a home's primary structure, not a backyard shed.
