SHED REMOVAL IN MEMPHIS

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Memphis shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Memphis requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Memphis ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Memphis asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Memphis rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. Memphis and Shelby County require a demolition permit to tear down any building or structure. The 2022 fee schedule lists demolition at $9 per 25,000 cubic feet, $70 minimum. Call (901) 222-8300.

City pickup

No. Memphis Solid Waste says city ordinance bars it from removing lumber, roofing, concrete or other construction and demolition debris.

Haul it yourself

South Shelby Landfill (Republic Services). Not published. The City says residents who pay the Solid Waste fee can take one truckload of non-hazardous waste a month to the landfill; it doesn't state a charge.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Shelby County. MidSouth Removal prices after an on-site look; JunkBusters Mid-South and The Junk Llamas give free quotes.

Do I need a permit?Memphis demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Every demolition needs a County permit

The joint building code says no one may wreck, demolish or raze any building or structure in Memphis and Shelby County without a permit from Code Enforcement, issued only to a licensed demolition contractor. An owner of record may get one for his own residential building. The 2022 fee schedule lists demolition at $9 per 25,000 cubic feet, $70 minimum and $560 maximum, plus a $4 administrative charge and $1 residential surcharge. The County also takes a cleanup deposit before it issues a demolition permit.

02

Utilities released and sewer capped first

Before a structure comes down, the owner or agent must notify every utility with a connection to it, and the permit isn't issued until the utilities release those connections. Code Enforcement asks for a written cut-off verification from Memphis Light, Gas and Water for electric and gas. Any sewer line is capped about 18 inches below grade and inspected before it's covered.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Memphis pick up shed debris?

No. Memphis Solid Waste says city ordinance prohibits it from removing scrap, lumber, roofing, concrete, fencing or any other debris from construction or demolition, and that contractors must remove the waste they create. Memphis Code makes the property owner have building debris privately hauled to an authorized disposal site. The shed's contents, like old furniture, can go out for twice-monthly bulk collection in a pile no bigger than 10 cubic yards.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

What else should I know in Memphis?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Only a licensed demolition contractor or the owner may tear a shed down

Memphis has no franchised hauler for demolition debris. The rule that matters is Shelby County's: the local building code makes it unlawful to wreck or demolish any building or structure without a Demolition Contractor License from the Building Official. The owner of record can demolish his own home or accessory building without one. Since June 2023, Code Enforcement checks the contractor's license before it issues each demolition permit. Class A and Class B licenses cost $100 and $75 a year.

City trash service is the City's alone, but demolition debris is the owner's job

Memphis Code makes it unlawful for anyone but the City to run a business collecting solid waste in the city without a permit, and a private collector's permit costs $240 a year. But the code defines solid waste as trash set out at the curb, and says the City won't remove building debris such as scrap lumber and roofing. The owner must have it privately hauled to a disposal site the Solid Waste Division authorizes. The code doesn't say whether a crew hauling its own teardown debris needs the collector's permit.

Nineteen historic districts need Landmarks approval

Memphis has nineteen local historic districts, including Cooper-Young, Central Gardens, Evergreen and Vollintine-Evergreen. An owner there who needs a building permit for exterior work must first get a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Memphis Landmarks Commission. Its 2021 fee sheet charges $600 to review tearing down a garage. Check the Zoning Atlas and call preservation staff at (901) 636-6619.

Asbestos check comes before the permit

Shelby County Health Department regulates demolition involving asbestos across Memphis and Shelby County and says an asbestos survey must be done before any demolition. Code Enforcement's demolition handout says an asbestos letter from the Health Department is needed for the permit. Its questionnaire decides whether a residential job needs the full 10-day notice and $130 fee. Call (901) 222-8270.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

What does shed removal cost in Memphis?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Shelby County, lower if it's already taken apart. MidSouth Removal says shed teardown is priced on the shed's size, access and materials after an on-site look, and its junk pricing is based on space in a 15-yard truck. JunkBusters Mid-South and The Junk Llamas give free quotes.

Can I pull the demolition permit myself?

Yes, for your own home's shed. The code lets the owner of record get a demolition permit for his own residential building and skip the demolition contractor license for his own accessory building, but you sign an affidavit that you'll personally supervise the demolition and cleanup. Develop 901 says Tennessee law lets a homeowner apply for permits if the homeowner lives in the home.

Can I haul the debris myself?

Yes. The City says residents who pay the Solid Waste fee can take one truckload of non-hazardous waste a month to Republic Services' South Shelby or North Shelby landfill, and its Clean City Guide sends do-it-yourself construction debris there, one load at a time, Memphis residents only. Bring a driver's license or MLGW bill as proof.

What if the shed has power or a gas line?

It has to be cut off before demolition. Code Enforcement asks for a written cut-off verification from MLGW for electric and gas with the demolition permit application. MidSouth Removal also says power to a shed must be disconnected before it tears the shed down.

Where does a contractor's load go?

The City's convenience centers turn away commercial haulers and contractors, so a removal crew's debris goes to a private site. Waste Connections' Railroad Avenue Disposal in Olive Branch, Mississippi, takes only construction and demolition materials; call for rates.

Which crews take the shed apart?

MidSouth Removal says its shed service includes tearing the shed down and hauling it away, and it also takes barns, greenhouses and chicken coops. JunkBusters Mid-South dismantles wood and metal sheds and cleans the area afterward. The Junk Llamas clear out the shed, then tear it down and haul it off.
