PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Salt Lake City asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Salt Lake City says tearing down an accessory structure needs a building permit, not a demolition permit; no size exemption is listed. Local historic districts also need a Certificate of Appropriateness.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Building Services' pre-demolition checklist says interior or accessory structure demolition requires a building permit; demolition permits are for removing the main building on a lot. The page lists no size exemption for small sheds. Building permit fees follow project value: the 2026 schedule starts at $55.97 for work valued up to $500. Building Services: 801-535-6000.

Utah's Division of Air Quality requires a certified asbestos inspection before demolition, except for homes with four or fewer units built on or after January 1, 1992. Work that removes load-bearing members also needs a state demolition notification ($50 base fee) and a 10-working-day wait. Any demolition in Salt Lake County needs a dust control plan. The state does not say how these rules apply to a detached shed.
Pulling footings, posts or anchors is digging. Notify Blue Stakes of Utah 811 at least 3 business days before you dig; the request is free.
No. Call 2 Haul gives City garbage customers two scheduled pickups a year, one bulk and one green waste, and the pile must be about 8 by 4 by 4 feet. It won't take construction material, including drywall, fencing, trim, flooring and lumber longer than 5 feet, or any dirt, rocks or concrete. Paint and other household hazardous waste are out too. The City says to call a private hauler for construction or demolition debris.

City code 9.08.200 says only authorized haulers may provide waste hauling services within city limits, and defines an authorized hauler as one approved by the City. The City's list has 16 authorized haulers, including 1-800-GOT-JUNK and Junk Hogs; none of the shed companies listed on this page is on it. Authorized haulers pay a $315 annual permit fee, and the application asks for a Salt Lake Valley Health Department permit number. The rule sits in the code section for multi-family and nonresidential service, and the City does not say whether it covers a crew hauling debris from a home shed job or a homeowner hauling their own.
