PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what West Valley City asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. West Valley City says you must get a demolition permit before you demolish a structure. It costs $53, after state Air Quality and utility sign-offs. No size exemption is listed.
West Valley City Building Inspections FAQs ↗West Valley City permit costs and fees ↗
No. Monthly bulky waste pickup refuses construction and demolition waste, bricks and broken concrete, and bundles must be 5 feet or shorter and under 75 pounds.
Salt Lake Valley Landfill (Salt Lake County). $17 flat rate per load for cars, SUVs, pickups up to 1 ton and hand-unloaded trailers. Larger trucks and machine-unloaded trailers pay by the ton: $36 mixed trash, $12 clean concrete or asphalt (pieces 2 feet or smaller), $17 minimum. Non-friable asbestos is $100 a ton.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The city's FAQ says to start with the Salt Lake County Health Department's asbestos coordinator (385-468-3914) for an asbestos check and pre-demolition inspection; the coordinator helps get state Air Quality approval. Gas lines are shut off through Dominion Energy (801-324-5111) and sewer and water through Granger Hunter Improvement District (801-968-3551). Plan on at least two weeks. The owner signs the application, and a hired contractor must list its company name and state license number. Building Inspections: 801-963-3285.

Utah's Division of Air Quality requires a certified asbestos inspection before demolition, except for homes with four or fewer units built on or after January 1, 1992. Removing load-bearing members needs a state demolition notification and a 10-working-day wait, and demolition in Salt Lake County needs a dust control plan. The state doesn't say how a detached shed is treated.
Digging out posts, piers or anchors counts as excavation. Notify Blue Stakes of Utah 811 at least 3 business days before you dig.
No. Bulky waste pickup comes monthly through the city's contractor, ACE Recycling and Disposal, but construction and demolition waste, bricks, broken concrete, dirt, rocks and railroad ties are on its do-not-take list. Everything must be bagged, boxed or bundled, no longer than 5 feet and under 75 pounds per piece. Quantities beyond what a normal home would have are also refused.

West Valley City has no franchise for hauling demolition debris that we found. Its solid waste code says a waste contractor gets no business license until each vehicle used to haul solid waste is inspected and permitted by 'the Department', which the code defines as the Salt Lake City-County Health Department or a West Valley City department. The fee is $85 per vehicle. A waste contractor is anyone in the business of collecting or hauling garbage, refuse or other solid waste.
West Valley City Code 24-2-109 (permits) ↗West Valley City Code 24-2-101 (definitions) ↗
West Valley City exempts a one-story detached accessory structure of 200 square feet or less from a building permit, though Planning & Zoning still approves its location (801-963-3312). That exemption covers building, not tearing down; the city's demolition guidance does not mention size.
West Valley City: repairs not requiring permits ↗West Valley City Building Inspections FAQs ↗
Once a year a neighborhood can reserve city dumpsters, from mid-March to early November, by calling 801-963-3334 starting the first business day of February. They are for residential use only: contractors and construction sites can't use them, and rock, dirt, concrete and asphalt are not allowed. Dumpsters must be tarped before hauling, so don't fill above the sidewalls.
The Salt Lake Valley Landfill is at 6030 W. California Avenue. West Valley City sends residents there for hazardous waste and Freon appliances. A pickup load of shed lumber and shingles costs a $17 flat rate.
