SHED REMOVAL IN ALEXANDRIA

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Alexandria shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Alexandria requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Alexandria ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

Get our price.

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

03

We haul it away.

We confirm a date, take the shed down, load every piece and leave the spot clean.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Alexandria asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Alexandria rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Not confirmed for small sheds. The City lists an $85 fee to demolish a residential accessory building but publishes no shed exemption. Call Code Administration at 703-746-4200; historic districts also need the BAR.

City pickup

No. City trash crews leave construction debris and lumber longer than 4 feet, and the City tells residents to call a private hauler for it.

Haul it yourself

Reworld Alexandria Waste-to-Energy Facility (resident drop-off). Free for eligible residents.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: DMV Go Junk lists $480 for a 6×8 shed and $800 to $1,200 for an 8×10 or 10×12. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559. The others quote per job or by truck space.

Do I need a permit?Alexandria demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

No published shed exemption

Alexandria's Permit Center says permits are required for demolitions of buildings and structures. Its list of residential work includes accessory structures such as sheds, garages and playhouses over 200 square feet. The state building code, which the City enforces, exempts one-story tool and storage sheds up to 256 square feet from permits, but it is written around the shed itself, and neither the state code nor the City says plainly that tearing down a small shed is exempt. Ask Code Administration before the crew comes.

02

What the demolition checklist asks for

The City's demolition checklist asks for letters from the gas, water and electric utilities saying service is ended, a capped sewer under a separate plumbing permit when needed, and an asbestos affidavit. Rodent control must be in place 10 days before demolition starts, usually shown with a pest contractor's agreement. Neighbors and adjacent owners must get certified letters saying a demolition permit has been applied for, with proof of receipt. Properties in a Resource Protection Area also need review by the Watershed Program.

03

The fee and the bond

The Code Administration fee schedule lists $85 to demolish a residential accessory building or detached garage. Surcharges are added: 14% administrative, 11% Permit Center, 5% technology, 0.2% training and the state academy levy. The City also holds a cash deposit or bond of $1 per square foot of the building being razed, with a $1,000 minimum, and returns it after the final inspection.

04

Digging out posts or a slab

Contact Virginia 811 three days before digging out footings, piers or a slab. The service is free.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Alexandria pick up shed debris?

No. City crews leave construction debris, dirt, brick and stones at the curb and tag them, and the City says residents should call a private hauler. Lumber longer than 4 feet is also left. Concrete, cinder block, drywall and similar building materials are on the City's not-acceptable list, and lumber or construction debris can't be mixed into a bulk brush pickup either.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Reworld Alexandria Waste-to-Energy Facility (resident drop-off)

5301 Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria, VA

The resident drop-off takes small amounts of metal, other non-trash items, brush and yard waste, up to 500 pounds once a week, for residents of the city it serves. It does not take household trash or construction and building debris such as drywall, concrete, tile, roofing or paint. Contractors are turned away.

Fees: Free for eligible residents.

Before you go: Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 6 to 11:30 a.m. Check in at the scale house with a government ID or utility bill; staff won't help unload. Phone 703-370-7722.

Alexandria Waste Recovery Facility

625 Burnside Place, Alexandria, VA

A construction and demolition debris transfer and recovery site. A public facility list shows resident dumping on Saturdays only. What it accepts from homeowners isn't published.

Fees: Not published.

Before you go: Call 703-823-5009 before loading to confirm Saturday hours, what it takes and the price.

City of Alexandria Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection Center

3224 Colvin Street, Alexandria, VA

City residents only. Takes oil-based paint, lacquers, thinners, gasoline, motor oil, pesticides, herbicides, lawn and garden products and electronics. Latex paint isn't treated as hazardous.

Fees: Free.

Before you go: Open Mondays and Saturdays, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bring a government ID or utility bill and stay in your vehicle in the queue.

What else should I know in Alexandria?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Anyone paid to haul shed debris needs a City hauler permit

Alexandria is an independent city, and it requires every solid waste and recycling hauler to permit each vehicle and container used to collect waste generated in the City, and it names construction and demolition debris. The fee is $300 a year for a truck and $150 for a pickup, and the City inspects each vehicle first. There is no single franchise hauler; any company can apply. The City's page doesn't say whether residents hauling their own debris are covered. Of the companies on this page, Nova Junk (as Northern Disposal - NOVA Junk) and JUSTJUNK are on the City's FY2027 permitted list.

Old Town and Parker-Gray: the historic board has a say

In the Old and Historic Alexandria District and the Parker-Gray District, the Board of Architectural Review must approve a Permit to Demolish for any demolition of more than 25 square feet of material, whether or not it can be seen from the street. Parker-Gray's reference guide lists demolition of accessory structures at the rear of a house as needing no staff or board review. No such shed exception is published for Old and Historic Alexandria. Call Preservation staff at 703-746-3833 before you book.

City drop-offs are for residents, not crews

The City's free drop-off at the Reworld waste-to-energy plant on Eisenhower Avenue takes up to 500 pounds a week of metal, other non-trash items, brush and yard waste from Alexandria residents. It turns away contractors, and it doesn't take construction and building debris such as drywall, concrete, tile or roofing. A metal shed cut into pieces is a fit; a wood shed's lumber and shingles are not.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Alexandria?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, DMV Go Junk publishes size-based prices: $480 for a 6×8, $800 to $1,200 for an 8×10 or 10×12 and $1,920 to $2,400 for a 12×16 or 12×20, plus $300 to $800 or more to break up and haul a concrete slab. LoadUp's Alexandria shed page shows $94 to $1,559. If a permit is needed, the City's fee and bond come on top.

Do I need an asbestos survey for an old shed?

State law exempts single-family homes and buildings with four or fewer units from the pre-demolition asbestos inspection rule, unless the work is for commercial or public development. Alexandria's demolition checklist still asks for an asbestos affidavit. If asbestos does have to come out first, the City requires a separate permit and a contractor licensed in Virginia for asbestos work. Call the Office of Environmental Quality at 703-746-4065 about what the affidavit needs for a shed.

Where can the wood and concrete go?

Not to a City site. The City lists the Alexandria Waste Recovery Facility at 625 Burnside Place, a construction debris site, with resident dumping on Saturdays only; call 703-823-5009 for what it takes and the price. For recycling single materials like concrete or brick, the City points residents to the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Builder's Recycling Guide.

What do I do with old paint and weed killer from the shed?

Take them to the City's Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection Center at 3224 Colvin Street, open Mondays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It's free for Alexandria residents with ID or a utility bill, and it takes oil-based paint, thinners, pesticides, herbicides and lawn products. Dried-out latex paint can go in the regular trash.

What if we dig up something old under the shed?

Alexandria has its own archaeology office. The demolition checklist says sites of historic interest may need Archaeology review, and if something of historic interest turns up during demolition, call Alexandria Archaeology at 703-746-4399.

Is there a weekday drop-off for a metal shed?

Yes, for residents. Reworld at 5301 Eisenhower Avenue takes small amounts of metal free once a week, up to 500 pounds, Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 6 to 11:30 a.m. Check in at the scale house with ID or a utility bill, and be ready to unload it yourself.
