SHED REMOVAL IN NORFOLK

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Norfolk shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Norfolk requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Norfolk ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

Get our price.

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Norfolk asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Norfolk rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. Norfolk's demolition rules name sheds: get a rodent letter from the Health Department and a hazmat letter from Fire Prevention, then a $50 demolition permit. Call 757-664-6565.

City pickup

Only for your own teardown. Scheduled bulk pickup takes lumber that isn't contractor waste, up to 3 cubic yards free. It never takes concrete or brick, and a hired crew must haul its own debris.

Haul it yourself

SPSA Norfolk Transfer Station. Host-city residents get free disposal within SPSA's 12-visits-a-year rule, in a car, a pickup of 1 ton or less, or a trailer up to 12 feet. Other loads pay the prevailing fee with a $20 minimum; SPSA's proposed July 1, 2026 sheet lists $78 a ton for non-contract customers. Cards only.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: Dumped Co. lists $650 to $1,000 for a small demolition job and LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for shed haul-away. The others quote each job.

Do I need a permit?Norfolk demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Two letters come before the demolition permit

Norfolk's demolition package says that for storage buildings, sheds and detached garages with no utilities, you need a rodent certificate from the Health Department's Vector Control and a hazmat-free letter from the Bureau of Fire Prevention before the building demolition permit is issued. Each inspection is good for 30 days. You also complete the building permit and asbestos exemption form, select Demolition, and apply in the City's online portal. A shed with water, sewer or power needs utility terminations and a sewer cap permit first.

03

Who may do the demolition

The package says demolition permits must be carried out by contractors holding a Virginia Class A, B or C license as a residential or commercial building contractor or heavy highway contractor. Homeowners and property owners with documentation may also get demolition permits.

04

Digging out posts or a slab

Contact Virginia 811 three days before digging out footings, piers or a slab. The service is free.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Norfolk pick up shed debris?

Only from a homeowner's own work. The City's bulk list includes lumber, wood boards and pieces, and wooden fencing with no concrete attached, as long as it isn't contractor waste. You must schedule each pickup through MyNorfolk or Norfolk Cares (757-664-6510) by 3 p.m. the day before. Each pickup is capped at 3 cubic yards, 12 a year; bigger scheduled piles cost $75 for up to 9 cubic yards under City Code § 41-32. Bricks, concrete and dirt must go with a private contractor. Construction materials never go in the 90-gallon cart.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

What else should I know in Norfolk?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Haulers need a City permit, but there's no franchise

Norfolk gives no company exclusive rights to haul construction or demolition debris. City Code § 41-23 says no one may run a private solid waste collection business in the city without a permit from the director of public works. The same section sends waste collected in the city to SPSA, but it leaves out construction debris going to a landfill. The code doesn't say whether a company that tears down and hauls away a shed counts as a collection business.

Whoever tears it down cleans it up

Under City Code § 41-31, debris from demolishing a building or structure must be removed by the contractor as the work goes. If the contractor doesn't, the property owner must do it or hire someone. City crews take debris only from work the owner or occupant did themselves.

The Woodland Avenue transfer station takes residents only on weekends

SPSA's Norfolk Transfer Station takes no residential loads Monday to Friday. Norfolk residents can come Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. On weekdays, SPSA's Landstown station in Virginia Beach is open to residents of every SPSA city, Norfolk included.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Norfolk?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, Dumped Co. publishes demolition tiers that cover sheds: $650 to $1,000 for a small job, $1,000 to $2,000 for a medium one and $2,000 or more for a large one. LoadUp's Norfolk shed page shows $94 to $1,559. The City's $50 demolition permit, $15 processing fee and the inspection fees come on top.

My shed is under 256 square feet. Do I still need a permit to tear it down?

Probably yes. The 256-square-foot line on Norfolk's permit pages is about building: a new shed that size or smaller needs only a free zoning certificate, and a larger one needs a building permit. The demolition package names sheds and gives no size exception, so check with Building Permits at 757-664-6565 before work starts.

Can I haul the lumber and shingles to the transfer station myself?

Yes, if you cut it to size. SPSA transfer stations take construction material and timber up to 6 feet long and 6 inches thick, and they take shingles. SPSA-area residents get 12 free visits a year with proof of residency, in a car, a pickup of 1 ton or less, or a trailer up to 12 feet. Other loads pay the prevailing fee with a $20 minimum.

Where do the slab and a metal shed go?

Norfolk's guide says bricks, concrete and dirt must be collected by a private contractor. SPSA's Regional Landfill at 1 Bob Foeller Drive in Suffolk takes large loads of broken concrete, and it takes residents' scrap metal, such as a cut-up metal shed, at no charge.

Do I need an asbestos survey for an old shed?

Probably not at a house. State law exempts single-family homes and buildings with four or fewer units from the pre-demolition asbestos inspection rule, unless the work is for commercial or public development. Norfolk still has you file its asbestos exemption form with the permit. If you find asbestos shingles, SPSA takes them only at the Regional Landfill, by appointment.

What do I do with old paint and weed killer from the shed?

Keep it out of the cart and the bulk pile. Norfolk takes household hazardous waste, including paint, thinners, pesticides and herbicides, only at the SPSA Norfolk Transfer Station on Woodland Avenue, Tuesdays and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.
