SHED REMOVAL IN ARLINGTON

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Arlington shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Arlington requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Arlington ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

Get our price.

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

03

We haul it away.

We confirm a date, take the shed down, load every piece and leave the spot clean.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Arlington asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Arlington rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Not confirmed for small sheds. Virginia's building code exempts one-story sheds up to 256 sq ft from permits, but Arlington's demolition page lists no shed exception. Ask Inspection Services, 703-228-3800.

City pickup

No. County trash excludes demolition debris, and building materials from paid work must be hauled privately. Metal shed panels can go out on a free scheduled metal pickup.

Haul it yourself

Arlington County Earth Products Yard. Free for inert material and scrap metal; a recycling fee applies to appliances.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: DMV Go Junk lists $480 for a 6×8 shed and $800 to $1,200 for an 8×10 or 10×12. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559. The others quote per job or by truck space.

Do I need a permit?Arlington demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

The 256-square-foot question

The Virginia building code, which Arlington enforces, requires a permit for construction or demolition of a building or structure. Its exemption list includes one-story detached tool and storage sheds and playhouses up to 256 square feet. That exemption names the shed itself rather than only building it, but neither the state code nor Arlington's demolition page says plainly that tearing down a small shed is exempt. Get the answer from Inspection Services before the crew comes. A shed over 256 square feet, or more than one story, needs a demolition permit.

02

What a demolition permit asks for

You apply online in Permit Arlington. The application needs copies of letters telling each adjoining owner about the demolition at least one week before it starts, a disconnect letter from the electric and gas providers or an owner certification that the shed isn't served, and an Asbestos Awareness Form. If the shed has a water or sewer line, the sewer lateral must be capped and inspected under a separate plumbing permit. If 1 to 2,499 square feet of ground is disturbed, a certified plat showing that area is required.

04

Wiring and digging

An electrical permit is required for removing fixtures or wiring, so a shed with a circuit needs one before the wiring comes out. Before digging out posts, piers or a slab, contact Virginia 811 three days ahead; the service is free.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Arlington pick up shed debris?

No, not a whole shed. The County code counts lumber, shingles, metal and concrete from demolishing any structure as construction and demolition debris, and leaves it out of trash pickup. Only small amounts from minor home repairs ride with the trash, with lumber tied in bundles no longer than 4 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds. The code also says building materials from work done by someone in the course of business must be disposed of privately, at your expense. Metal panels are the exception: schedule a free County metal pickup at 703-228-5000.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Arlington County Earth Products Yard

4300 29th St. S., Arlington, VA 22206

County residents only. Takes inert material: concrete with no rebar or mesh, asphalt, brick and masonry block, ceramic tile, rock, sand and earth, plus scrap metal pieces under 50 pounds. It does not take lumber, drywall, shingles, insulation or trash.

Fees: Free for inert material and scrap metal; a recycling fee applies to appliances.

Before you go: Weekdays 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment (703-228-5000), or the first Saturday of the month, 8 a.m. to noon. Bring proof of residency. Limit one pickup load or 3 cubic yards per resident per month. Contractors are not allowed.

Alexandria Waste Recovery Facility

625 Burnside Place, Alexandria, VA

A construction and demolition debris transfer and recovery site. A public facility list shows resident dumping on Saturdays only. What it accepts from homeowners isn't published.

Fees: Not published.

Before you go: Call 703-823-5009 before loading to confirm Saturday hours, what it takes and the price.

Arlington County Household Hazardous Materials Facility

565 31st St. S., Arlington, VA (surface lot across from the Water Pollution Control Plant)

County residents and employees only. Takes most household hazardous products, such as paint, motor oil, pesticides and fertilizer. Does not take crumbly (friable) asbestos, ammunition, medical waste or business waste.

Fees: Free.

Before you go: Open most days of the week; check the County page for current hours before you go.

What else should I know in Arlington?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Arlington County is the only government here

Arlington is a county with no incorporated city inside it, so there is no city hall to call. The County's Inspection Services Division issues demolition and electrical permits, and the County's Department of Environmental Services runs trash pickup and the drop-off sites. Questions about a shed teardown go to Inspection Services at 703-228-3800.

No franchise hauler, but haulers need a County permit

Arlington doesn't give any one company the right to haul demolition debris. It does say commercial haulers in Arlington must be permitted by the County, at $150 per truck a year on the County's page. The code ties that permit to companies doing regularly scheduled commercial collection, and the County's page names trash, recycling, organics and grease routes. Neither says whether a company hired once to tear down and haul a shed needs the permit.

Historic districts need a certificate first

In Arlington's local historic districts, a certificate of appropriateness is required for all exterior alterations, new construction and demolition. The County's page doesn't exempt sheds or other outbuildings. Applications go through the Design Review Committee and then the Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board, so plan for at least one public meeting before the teardown.

Metal shed panels get a free County pickup

Homes on County trash service can schedule a curbside metal pickup online or at 703-228-5000. Metal items other than appliances are collected free of charge, but must be scheduled. Pile them at the curb or in the street, not in the yard, with about 25 feet of clearance overhead for the crane truck.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Arlington?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, DMV Go Junk publishes size-based prices: $480 for a 6×8, $800 to $1,200 for an 8×10 or 10×12 and $1,920 to $2,400 for a 12×16 or 12×20. It adds $300 to $800 or more to break up and haul a concrete slab. LoadUp's Arlington shed page shows $94 to $1,559.

Who can apply for the demolition permit?

The owner can apply, or a contractor licensed in Virginia for the work. Anyone else who applies needs a Permit Authorization Affidavit from the owner. Residential applications take up to two business days to review, and work may not start until the permit is issued and posted.

Do I need an asbestos inspection for an old shed?

Usually not for a house lot. Arlington needs proof of an asbestos inspection before demolishing a building first permitted before 1985, but the state code exempts single-family homes and homes with four or fewer units unless the work is for commercial use. You still fill out the Asbestos Awareness Form, and the County takes questions at 703-228-3800.

Where can a broken-up concrete pad go?

Arlington residents can take concrete with no rebar or mesh, along with brick, block, rock and sand, to the Earth Products Yard at 4300 29th St. S. It's free, by appointment on weekdays (703-228-5000) or the first Saturday morning of the month, and limited to one pickup load or 3 cubic yards a month. It doesn't take lumber, shingles or drywall, and contractors are turned away.

What about old paint and weed killer stored in the shed?

Take them to the County's Household Hazardous Materials drop-off at 565 31st St. S., across from the Water Pollution Control Plant. It's free for Arlington residents and takes paint, motor oil, pesticides and fertilizer. It doesn't take crumbly asbestos.

Can I take the wood myself somewhere?

Not to a County site. The closest place listed for mixed construction debris is the Alexandria Waste Recovery Facility at 625 Burnside Place in Alexandria, which the City of Alexandria lists with resident dumping on Saturdays only. Its fee isn't published; call 703-823-5009 first.
