SHED REMOVAL IN CHESAPEAKE

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Chesapeake shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Chesapeake requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Chesapeake ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

Get our price.

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

03

We haul it away.

We confirm a date, take the shed down, load every piece and leave the spot clean.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Chesapeake asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Chesapeake rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Likely yes. The City's permit form has a box to demolish an accessory structure, and no shed exception is published. Call Development and Permits at 757-382-6018.

City pickup

No. Bulk pickup excludes construction materials, refuse wood, fencing, siding, roofing and demolition debris. The City says to hire a disposal company or haul it to SPSA.

Haul it yourself

SPSA Chesapeake Transfer Station (Greenbrier). 12 free resident visits a year with proof of residency. Other loads pay the prevailing fee with a $20 minimum; SPSA's proposed July 1, 2026 sheet lists $78 a ton for non-contract customers. Cards only.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: Dumped Co. lists $650 to $1,000 for a small demolition job and LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for shed haul-away. The others quote each job.

Do I need a permit?Chesapeake demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Demolition goes on the building permit form

Chesapeake lists demolition under the building permit, and its residential building and zoning application has a 'Demo Accessory Structure' box. Building a one-story shed of 256 square feet or less needs only a zoning permit (a building permit in the AE flood zone), but that rule is written for new sheds; the City doesn't say whether it covers tearing one down.

02

The demolition fee and paperwork

The fee schedule lists a $50 administrative fee and a $50 permit fee per structure, plus a 2% state levy and a $10 technology fee. Structures tied to City water or sewer may owe Public Utilities fees too. For demolitions the City asks for rodent-free certification, asbestos certification or an exemption where it applies, Public Utilities approval for sewer connections, and disconnect letters from utilities such as Dominion and Virginia Natural Gas.

03

Digging out posts or a slab

Contact Virginia 811 three days before digging out footings, piers or a slab. The service is free.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Chesapeake pick up shed debris?

No. Under City Code § 62-59, the City doesn't collect construction debris with bulk trash, and it defines that to include building materials, fencing and siding, refuse wood, roofing and demolition debris. Wood and fencing are also off the bulk household list. Debris should go with your contractor or a disposal company, or you can take it to an SPSA transfer station. Piles left at the curb get a 48-hour notice, after which the City may remove them and bill the cost plus an administrative fee of at least $100.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

What else should I know in Chesapeake?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

No franchised hauler, and no City hauler licence

Chesapeake gives no company exclusive rights to haul construction or demolition debris. The code's old article on private collectors was replaced in 1994, and the City publishes no hauler licence or approved list. The only franchise language covers picking up recyclables set out at the curb. The code sends solid waste from the City to the SPSA regional system, but it expressly leaves construction and demolition waste out of that rule.

A rodent check comes before any demolition permit

Development and Permits won't issue a demolition permit until a rodent-free inspection is done. The City charges a flat $50 for it, or you can skip it by providing a report from a pest control company. Sheds that have sat for years often hide rats and wasps, so this is worth planning for.

The Greenbrier transfer station has resident-only hours

SPSA's Chesapeake Transfer Station on Hollowell Lane takes residents' loads Monday, Wednesday (Chesapeake residents only), Saturday, and Sunday afternoon (Chesapeake residents only); it takes none on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. On weekdays the City points residents to the SPSA Suffolk station instead. Homeowner demolition debris can go to any SPSA transfer station or the landfill in Suffolk.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

Two companies publish prices that cover Chesapeake sheds. COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Chesapeake?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, Dumped Co. publishes demolition tiers that cover sheds: $650 to $1,000 for a small job, $1,000 to $2,000 for a medium one and $2,000 or more for a large one. LoadUp's Chesapeake shed page shows $94 to $1,559. If the City requires a demolition permit, its fees and the $50 rodent inspection come on top.

Can I haul the lumber and shingles to the transfer station myself?

Yes, if you cut it down to size. SPSA transfer stations take construction material and timber up to 6 feet long and 6 inches thick, and they take shingles. Chesapeake residents get 12 free drop-offs a year with proof of residency; after that the City says it's $78 a ton with a $20 minimum. Come in a car, a pickup of 1 ton or less, or a trailer up to 12 feet.

Where do the slab and a metal shed go?

SPSA transfer stations take small amounts of concrete in small pieces from member-city residents; larger loads of broken concrete go to SPSA's Regional Landfill at 1 Bob Foeller Drive in Suffolk. The Regional Landfill also takes residents' scrap metal, such as a cut-up metal shed, at no charge.

Do I need an asbestos survey for an old shed?

Probably not at a house. State law exempts single-family homes and buildings with four or fewer units from the pre-demolition asbestos inspection rule, unless the work is for commercial or public development. Chesapeake asks for asbestos certification or an exemption where it applies. If you find asbestos shingles, SPSA takes them only at the Regional Landfill, by appointment.

What do I do with old paint and weed killer from the shed?

Don't put it in the cart; the City says pesticides, herbicides, paint and thinner can't go in the garbage. SPSA's Chesapeake Transfer Station takes household hazardous waste every third Saturday and first Wednesday of the month, 9 a.m. to noon.
