PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Kent asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes, as written. Kent requires a demolition permit to remove a whole structure, foundation included. No small-shed exemption is published; ask the Permit Center, 253-856-5300.

No. Republic's paid on-call pickup covers appliances, furniture, mattresses, large scrap metal and boxed untreated wood. Kent's spring and fall clean-ups take bagged extra garbage only.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Kent's residential permit page lists demolishing a building among work that needs a permit, and its demolition permit covers removing an entire structure including the foundation. Taking down only part of a building is an alteration permit instead. Kent adopts the 2021 International Residential Code as amended by the state; neither Kent page says whether a small detached shed is exempt from a demolition permit. Apply through the City's permitting portal under Minor Work Permits, Demolition.

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency makes it unlawful to demolish any structure without an asbestos survey by an AHERA-certified inspector. Its rules require a notification and a 10-day wait for structures with a projected roof area over 120 square feet, even with no asbestos; Kent's checklist goes further and says a notification is required for all demolition projects.

Kent doesn't issue electrical permits; they go through the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries. L&I says a homeowner should buy one only for work they do on their own property, and a hired electrical contractor must buy the permit for its work.

No, not a whole shed. Republic Services, Kent's contracted hauler, runs a paid on-call pickup for large appliances, furniture, mattresses, large scrap metal and untreated, unpainted wood waste packed in a cardboard box labeled "wood waste." The 2026 rate sheet prices sofas and chairs, mattresses and most appliances at $79.89 an item; no price is listed for wood waste. Call Republic at 206-682-9735. Kent's free spring and fall curbside clean-ups take up to 10 units of extra garbage in bags, boxes or cans under 60 pounds each, and no scrap metal.

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗
18800 Orillia Rd S, Tukwila, WA 98188
The busiest County transfer station, for people who live or do business in King County's service area. It takes self-hauled construction and demolition debris as garbage, except from dump trucks or dump trailers unless debris is under 20% of the load. Clean wood, scrap metal and cardboard can't go in the garbage here and must be sorted into the recycling bins next to the self-haul unloading area.
Fees: Garbage $40.25 minimum (up to 320 lb), then $243.38 per ton. Clean wood $20.70 minimum, $129.38 per ton. $25 unsecured-load fee. New fees start January 1, 2027.

Kent City Code 7.03.020 says solid waste collection is made by collection companies the City authorizes, and it is unlawful for anyone other than those authorized by the City to haul solid waste through Kent's streets. State law, which Kent's code points to, counts demolition and construction wastes as solid waste. The only exceptions are businesses with old self-haul permits and a customer occasionally hauling waste from their own property to a King County site. The code names no exception for junk removal or demolition crews, and the City publishes no list of authorized haulers besides its contractor, Republic Services.

Kent's Demolition Pre-Application Checklist must be signed off by a Public Works inspector before you apply. Water and sewer lines are capped and inspected before backfilling, city utility balances are paid, and Puget Sound Energy disconnects and verifies any power or gas (1-888-225-5773). The application asks for the contractor's name and license number and a site plan.
County code bans clean wood, metal, cardboard, concrete, bricks, asphalt paving and new gypsum scrap from the landfill. Mixed debris that still holds those materials must go to a county-designated C&D facility; sorted wood and metal can go to any recycler. Painted or treated wood isn't recyclable. First violations draw a $100 fine, then $500.

King County's Bow Lake station, off I-5 in Tukwila, is the busiest in the County system and mainly serves Kent and its neighbors. The new South County station in Algona opened in 2026, replacing the old Algona transfer station. Both recycle clean wood and scrap metal separately from garbage.

Kent's code doesn't say outright. It makes it unlawful for anyone but city-authorized haulers to haul solid waste on Kent's streets, and it defines garbage containers to include drop boxes approved by the director or the collection company. Ask Public Works Engineering at 253-856-5500 before booking a container from a company other than Republic.
