PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Tacoma asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Not spelled out. Tacoma issues demolition permits for an entire building or structure and publishes no size exemption for removal. Ask Planning and Development Services, (253) 591-5030.
No. Call-2-Haul refuses construction materials, including lumber, roofing, fencing and decking. Tacoma residents can self-haul shed debris to the transfer center from $20 a load.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Tacoma's residential permit list includes a Demolition (DEMOR) permit for demolition of an entire building or structure, and residential building demolitions can be requested over the counter. The City's permit-free list includes building a one-story detached accessory structure up to 200 square feet, and its shed tip sheet says a permit is needed for a new accessory structure of 200 square feet or larger. Both are about building, not tearing down, and no City page read says whether a small shed's removal needs a DEMOR permit. Questions: Planning and Development Services, (253) 591-5030 or Permits@tacoma.gov.

Pierce County is in the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency's area. The agency requires an asbestos survey by an AHERA-certified inspector before a demolition, and a filed Asbestos/Demolition Notification with fee for structures over 120 square feet of roof area, even with no asbestos. Demolitions carry a 10-day waiting period.

Tacoma Power, not the City building office, issues electrical permits and inspections in its service area, so a powered shed should be disconnected under a Tacoma Power permit. Questions: Electrical Inspections, 253-502-8277. Before pulling posts or footings, call Washington811 to have buried lines marked.

No. Residential customers get two Call-2-Haul pickups or self-haul trips a year, built into their rates, for up to three large items and 15 boxes or bags. Construction materials such as lumber, roofing, fencing, decking and cement items are on the not-accepted list. Shed debris goes to the Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Center by self-haul, or out with a removal company that has the City's permission to haul.

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Tacoma runs its own garbage utility and claims exclusive control of all solid waste collection and disposal in the city, and its code counts demolition and construction waste as solid waste. Anyone other than City crews and equipment needs a City special permit to collect, remove or dispose of it. A business may haul waste from its own premises with its own staff and truck, but the code says hiring others for disposal is a violation. Residents can self-haul. Questions: Special Permit Program, (253) 502-2100 or swsp@tacoma.gov.

Tacoma's code limits what the transfer center's equipment can take: lumber no longer than 8 feet, heavy timbers 6 by 6 inches or larger cut to 4-foot lengths, and wall sections no bigger than 4 by 8 feet. Bigger pieces can bring a special handling fee. Dusty material such as insulation should be bagged or wetted, and loads must be covered or tied down.

The Tacoma Recycle Center at the transfer center takes scrap metal, and City residential customers use it at no added cost.
