PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Seattle asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Not for a small one. A one-story shed under 120 square feet of roof, on pier blocks or a slab, needs no demolition permit. Bigger sheds need one, plus 15 days of rat abatement.

No. SPU's Special Item Pickup takes furniture and appliances at $31 an item, not building debris. You can haul shed debris to a City transfer station, from $37 a trip.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
SDCI says you need a demolition permit to remove a building, but not to remove a one-story accessory structure with less than 120 square feet of roof area built on pier blocks or a slab on grade. Tip 337 counts roof overhangs in that area. A shed removed as part of a larger project at a house or duplex can go on that project's construction permit. Demolition permit fees are 1.5 times the base fee plus inspection fees and surcharges. Questions: SDCI, (206) 684-8600.
Seattle SDCI: Demolition Permit - Building ↗SDCI Tip 337: Demolition and Deconstruction (PDF) ↗
Every demolition permit needs at least 15 days of rat abatement by a licensed pest control company right before work starts. If a shed has a side sewer that will be capped, a side sewer permit and an SDCI inspection of the cap come first.

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency requires an asbestos survey by an AHERA-certified inspector before a demolition. Structures with more than 120 square feet of roof area also need a filed Asbestos/Demolition Notification and fee, even with no asbestos, and demolitions carry a 10-day waiting period.

Seattle requires an electrical permit whenever wiring is installed, altered, extended or connected. Owners may do their own work on a home they own and live in; otherwise a licensed electrical contractor pulls the permit. Before pulling posts or footings, call Washington811 to have buried lines marked.
No. Seattle Public Utilities' Special Item Pickup takes large furniture, appliances and TVs at $31 an item, up to 300 pounds and 8 feet tall, and its list doesn't include lumber or building debris. Extra garbage goes out with your cart, by special pickup, or to a transfer station. For a whole shed, the options are a removal company, a WM disposal container, or a self-haul trip to the North or South Transfer Station.

Seattle contracts with Waste Management to haul non-recyclable construction and demolition waste, so a rented disposal container on a job must come from WM. Recycling containers can be hauled by any recycling company. SPU says these rules don't apply to demolition companies hauling their own debris, to residents self-hauling from their own property, or to junk removal companies hired to clean up debris that isn't set out in a container. Questions: Katie Kennedy at SPU, (206) 386-9772.

Seattle bans unpainted and untreated wood, metal, cardboard, asphalt paving, bricks and concrete from disposal. Separated, they go to a recycler; mixed together or with trash, they must go to a City-qualified mixed C&D recycler such as the MCS sites on South Hudson Street and East Marginal Way South. The bans don't cover painted wood, hazardous materials or small amounts. Painted siding and shingles from a shed can go to disposal.

Seattle has seven landmark or special review districts and more than 200 individual landmarks. On a landmark site or in one of those districts, demolition needs a Certificate of Approval from the Historic Preservation Program. Ask the Department of Neighborhoods, (206) 684-0228, before taking down an outbuilding there.
Seattle's transfer stations refuse oil paint, household chemicals, fuel and propane tanks. The North site at 12550 Stone Ave. N. (Sunday to Tuesday) and the South site at 8105 5th Ave. S. (Thursday to Saturday) take household hazardous waste free, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with no appointment.

Cut it down first: the stations refuse material over 8 feet long and over 200 pounds. Keep clean, unpainted wood and scrap metal apart from painted siding and shingles, since separated loads pay less, and tie down or cover the load to avoid the unsecured-load fee.
